The Keys of the Unseen: Five Things That No One Knows Except Allah

The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 4910 ):

Q5: Allah the Exalted says in His Noble Book:
Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
[Luqman 31:34]
Among the meanings of this noble verse is that Allah says:
and knows what is in the wombsوَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الأَرْحَامِ
[Luqman 31:34]
A major discussion has arisen between me and one of my friends regarding this verse. He told me that modern science and doctors have been able to determine what is in the womb of a woman, whether it is male or female, through X-rays. I said to him: Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
and knows what is in the wombsوَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الأَرْحَامِ
[Luqman 31:34]
Does the verse mean that science has not discovered what is in the wombs, or is the interpretation of the verse something else?

A5: It is established in authentic hadiths that the keys of the unseen are five, which no one knows except Allah, and that they are those mentioned in the verse about which the question was asked. Among this is what al-Bukhari narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
five (things) which no one knows except Allahمفاتيح الغيب خمس لا يعلمهن إلاَّ الله
Sunan Ibn Majah 4044Sahih (Darussalam)
:
Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
[Luqman 31:34]
, and in a narration from him from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The (Hour) is one of the five things of the unseen. No one knows them except Allah. Then (the Holy Prophet) recited (the folowing verse):" Verily Allah! with Him alone is the knowledge of the Hour and He it is Who sends down the rain and knows that which is in the wombsمفاتيح الغيب خمس ثم قرأ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَـزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الأَرْحَامِ
Sahih Muslim 10
, narrated by the Imam Ahmad from him, and from Ibn Mas'ud with the same meaning. It was also narrated through other paths that support what the verse indicates. The meaning of the verse is that Allah the Exalted has reserved for Himself the knowledge of the Hour, so He does not reveal it for its time except He; no angel near to Him and no messenger sent knows it for its appointed time, and Allah has informed them of its signs. No one knows when the rain will descend, or in which place it will descend, except Allah, though people of experience may know it approximately and generally when the signs are present and the causes are established, with some guesswork involved, and it may not come to pass. He, Glorified is He, has also reserved for Himself the detailed knowledge of what is in the wombs, regarding its creation, its non-creation, its growth, its remaining for its full term, or its falling before that, alive or dead, and its safety, and what may befall it of afflictions, without
anyone acquiring knowledge of it from another or depending on causes or experiments. Rather, He knows what it will be before it is, and before the causes exist. The One who determines the causes and brings them into existence with knowledge that does not fail and from which reality does not differ is Allah, Glorified and Exalted. A created being may be shown something of the conditions of what is in the wombs, such as its maleness or femaleness, its safety, or its being afflicted, or the nearness of birth, or the expectation of the miscarriage of the fetus before its term, but that is only by Allah's guidance to the causes of that, such as revealing it through X-rays, not from itself and not without causes. And that is after Allah commands the angel to form the fetus, and it is not comprehensive of all the conditions of what is in the womb, but rather general in some of it, with the possibility of error sometimes. And a soul does not know what it will earn tomorrow in matters of its religion and its worldly life, so this is also something Allah has reserved for Himself in detail. People may expect a gain or a loss in general, which inspires in them hope and determination to strive, or fear and hesitation, based on signs and surrounding circumstances, so all of this is not called knowledge. Likewise, a soul does not know on which land it will die, on land or sea, in its own country or another country; only Allah alone knows the details of that, for He, Glorified and Exalted, has perfect knowledge and encompassing awareness of all matters, their apparent and their hidden, their outer and their inner. In summary: The knowledge of Allah is from Himself, not acquired from another, and not dependent on causes and experiments. He knows what has been and what will be, and there is no ambiguity in His knowledge, nor does it fail. It is comprehensive and inclusive of all
created things in detail, the great and the small, unlike others, Glorified is He. And Allah is the One to be sought for help. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
