Supplication and seeking forgiveness for one who used to supplicate to the dead and the like

Fatwa number ( 4184 ):
Q: I have a teacher who taught me the Qur'an, and my maternal grandfather has passed away. They used to write verses of the Qur'an on amulets and give them to people, and then they ordered me to commit to reciting the Qur'an. I committed to reciting the Qur'an until my Lord made tawhid (the oneness of Allah) clear to me, and then it became apparent to me that what they did was actually not correct. Is it possible for me to supplicate for them and seek forgiveness for them? Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.
A: Writing verses of the Qur'an to be attached as amulets is not permissible, and likewise, hanging them up hoping for protection, healing, or warding off calamity is not permissible according to the correct view. However, despite that, it is permissible for you to supplicate for your teacher and your grandfather with mercy and forgiveness, even if they did that in their lifetimes; because it is not shirk (associating partners with Allah), even though it is not permissible. However, if you knew from them
something else that necessitates their kufr (disbelief), such as supplicating to the dead, calling for aid from the jinn, and the like of the types of major shirk, then do not supplicate for them and do not seek forgiveness for them. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
