Standing for the One Who Enters and Kissing Him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2294 ):
Q: What is the ruling on standing for the one who enters and kissing him?
A: First: Regarding standing for the one who enters, the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah gave a detailed answer based on the evidence of the Shari'ah, which we have mentioned because it fulfills the objective. He said, may Allah have mercy on him: "It was not the custom of the Salaf in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Rightly Guided Successors to habitually stand up whenever they saw him (peace and blessings be upon him), as many people do. Rather, Anas ibn Malik said: 'There was no one whom they loved more than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when they saw him, they did not stand up for him because they knew his dislike of that. But they would sometimes stand up for the one who came from a journey to welcome him.' As was narrated
Nafi’ said It was Ibn ‘Umar’s habit that whenever he came to Makkah he spent the night at Dhu Tuwa in the morning he would take a bath and enter Makkah in the daytime. He used to say the Prophet (ﷺ) had done so.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1865Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
And he said to the Ansar when Sa'd ibn Mu'adh came: Stand up to your master
, and he had come to judge Banu Qurayzah ; because they had submitted to his judgment. What people should habitually do is follow the Salaf in what they were upon in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for they are the best of generations, and the best of speech is the speech of
Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So no one should turn away from the guidance of the best of people and the guidance of the best of generations to what is less than that. It is also befitting for the one who is obeyed not to approve of that with his companions such that when they see him, they do not stand up for him except in the usual meeting. As for standing up for the one who comes from a journey or the like to welcome him, that is good. And if it is the custom of people to honor the one who arrives by standing up, and if they were to leave it, they would assume that it is due to neglecting his right or intending to belittle him, and they do not know the custom that agrees with the Sunnah, then the best is to stand up for him; because that is better for the bond of affection and removing hatred and animosity. As for the one who knows the custom of the people that agrees with the Sunnah, there is no harm in leaving that for him, and this standing mentioned is not in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever wishes that he be received by men standing then, let him take his seat in the Fire.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2755Hasan (Darussalam)
, for that is that they stand up for him while he is sitting, it is not that they stand up for his arrival when he comes. For this reason, they distinguished between saying: I stood up to him and I stood up for him, and the one who stands for the one who is coming is equal to him in standing, unlike the one who stands for the one who is sitting. And it is established in [Sahih Muslim ]
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he prayed with them sitting down due to his illness and they prayed standing, ordered them to sit and said: Do not honor me as the non-Arabs honor one anotherأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لما صلَّى بهم قاعدًا من مرضه وصلوا قيامًا أمرهم بالقعود وقال: لا تعظموني كما يعظم الأعاجم بعضها بعضًا
, and he forbade them from standing in prayer while he was sitting so that they would not imitate the non-Arabs who stand up for their great ones while they are sitting. And the summary of all of that which is good is following the customs and morals of the Salaf and exerting effort in that
according to ability. So whoever does not believe that and does not know that it is the custom, and there is a predominant harm in not treating him with the respect he is accustomed to from people, then he repels the greater of the two harms by committing the lesser of them, just as it is obligatory to do the greater of the two goods by missing the lesser of them." End of the words of the Shaykh al-Islam. And what increases the clarification of what he mentioned is what is established in the two Sahihs in the story of Ka'b ibn Malik when Allah accepted his repentance and the repentance of his two companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, and in it that when Ka'b entered the mosque, Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah ran to him, greeted him, and congratulated him on his repentance, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not disapprove of that, so that indicates the permissibility of standing up to meet the one who enters, shaking his hand, and greeting him. And from that is what is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him)
That when he used to enter upon his daughter Fatimah, she would stand up to him, take his hand, and seat him in her place, and when she used to enter upon him, he would stand up to her, take her hand, and seat her in his placeأنه كان إذا دخل على ابنته فاطمة قامت إليه وأخذت بيده وأجلسته مكانها، وإذا دخلت عليه قام إليها وأخذ بيدها وأجلسها مكانه
which al-Tirmidhi graded as good. Second: As for kissing, what has come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates its prescription,
Narrated 'Aishah: "Zaid bin Harithah arrived in Al-Madinah while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was in his house. So he went and knocked at the door, so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood naked (1), dragging his garment - and by Allah! I did not see him naked before nor afterwards - and he hugged him and kissed him."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2732Da'if (Darussalam)
narrated by al-Tirmidhi, and he said: A good hadith, and the meaning of naked: that is, he has nothing on him except the lower garment. So this hadith indicates the prescription of doing that with the one who comes. And from Abu Hurayrah may Allah be pleased with him, he said:
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, kissed Hasan ibn 'Ali while al-Aqra' ibn Habis at-Tamimi was sitting with him. Al-Aqra' observed, 'I have ten children and I have never kissed any of them.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, looked at him and said, 'Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.'
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 91
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, so this hadith indicates the prescription of kissing when it is from the aspect of compassion and mercy. As for kissing in the usual meeting, what has come indicates its non-prescription, rather one suffices with shaking hands, so from Qatadah may Allah be pleased with him, he said:
I asked Anas: "Did the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) use to shake hands?'' He said: "Yes.''
Riyad as-Salihin 885
Narrated by al-Bukhari. And from Anas may Allah be pleased with him, he said:
When the people of Yemen came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The people of Yemen have visited you. They are the first to introduce the tradition of handshaking."
Riyad as-Salihin 886
Narrated by Abu Dawud with a sound chain. And from al-Bara' may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No two Muslims meet each other and shake hands, except that Allah forgives them before they part.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2727Da'if (Darussalam)
Narrated by
Abu Dawud, and narrated by Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi and he graded it as sound. And from Anas may Allah be pleased with him, he said:
A man asked: "O Messenger of Allah! When a man meets a brother or a friend, should he bow to him?" He said, "No." The man asked whether he should embrace and kiss him? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied, "No." He asked whether he should hold his hand and shake it? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied, "Yes."
Riyad as-Salihin 888
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, and he said: A good hadith, he said so, and its chain is weak; because in it is Hanzalah al-Sudusi and he is weak according to the people of knowledge, but perhaps al-Tirmidhi graded it as good due to the existence of what corroborates it in the other hadiths. And Ahmad , al-Nasa'i , al-Tirmidhi and others narrated it with sound chains, and al-Tirmidhi graded it as sound from Safwan ibn 'Asal
Two Jews asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about nine clear signs. When he answered their question, they kissed his hands and feet and said: "We bear witness that you are a Prophet."
the hadith. And al-Tabarani narrated it with a good chain from Anas may Allah be pleased with him, he said:
The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when they met, would shake hands, and when they returned from a journey, they would embrace.
, the scholar Ibn Muflih mentioned it in [Al-Adab al-Shar'iyyah]. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
