The Measure of Deeds: The Book and the Sunnah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 5078 ):
Q2: What does Islam say about a man who introduces something in Islam, considers it a praiseworthy deed, and claims that it is not among the matters that lead a person into religious innovation?
A2: This man’s deed is to be judged by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Whatever agrees with them is truth, and whatever contradicts them is rejected and returned to its doer. You have not mentioned to us any of his deeds so that we might know from them whether they are religious innovation or recommended practice.
We advise you to read the book [Al-I’tisam] by al-Shatibi, for it contains a clear and sufficient explanation of the meaning of religious innovation, its categories, its rulings, and its examples. Also read the book [Al-Sunan wa al-Mubtada’at], the book [Al-Ibda’ fi Mudharri al-Ibtida’], the book [Al-Bida’ wa al-Hawadith], and the book [Tanbih al-Ghafilin] by Ibn al-Nahhas, along with other books that distinguish between the Sunnah and religious innovation. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
