The Second: Dhikr and the Explanation of the Rulings of the One Who Forgets, Its Evidence, and Its Example.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The second condition is that one be in a state of dhikr. So what is the opposite of dhikr? Or what is the opposite of dhukr? Which is correct: dhikr or dhukr?

The questioner : Dhikr.

The Shaykh : Not dhikr. Dhikr is the well-known utterance, such as "La ilaha illa Allah," "Subhan Allah," and "Alhamdulillah." Dhukr is the opposite of forgetfulness, and this is what is intended here, since its opposite is forgetfulness. The evidence that the one who forgets does not break his fast is:

The questioner : Whoever eats or...

The Shaykh : No, no. Give us the general evidence from the Qur'an. I prefer, brothers, that we focus our evidence on the Qur'an, because no one can dispute the Qur'an; no one says, "This is not correct." But with a hadith, you might cite a hadith, and the opponent might say, "This is weak; we do not accept it." Because for one who argues from the Sunnah, two things are necessary: the establishment of the evidence and the establishment of the indication. Arguing from the Qur'an requires only one thing: the establishment of the indication.

The questioner : The saying of Allah the Exalted:
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. ربنا لا تؤاخذنا إن نسينا أو خطأنا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]

The Shaykh : Well done. May Allah reward you. This is a general evidence. A specific evidence? Yes.

The questioner : The hadith of the Messenger:
Whoever eats or drinks while forgetting, let him complete his fast, for it is only that Allah has fed him and given him drink. من أكل أو شرب ناسيا فليتم صومه فإنما أطعمه الله وسقاه
Sahih Ibn Hibban 14:104

The Shaykh :
If anyone forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks he should complete his fast, for it is only Allah Who has fed him and given him drink. من نسي وهو صائم فأكل أو شرب فليتم صومه فإما أطعمه الله وسقاه
Sahih Muslim 1155
Well done. Now, if the one who forgets remembers while he is in the middle of eating, but he completes his eating, is his fast invalid or not? Yes, it is invalid due to what he completed of the eating, not due to what preceded it. Likewise, if a person knows that the sun has not set and he eats after knowing this, his fast is invalid. For this reason, it is obligatory for one whose excuse has ended to stop and abstain. If he remembers, it is obligatory for him to abstain. If he knows, it is obligatory for him to abstain.
