Q1: I read in some books that the science of chemistry is a type of sorcery. Is this correct? I have heard of a book by Ibn al-Qayyim
titled (The Refutation of Chemistry from Forty Angles). Is it forbidden to conduct the chemical experiments performed in schools and universities for the study of substances and elements, on the grounds that they are sorcery, or not? I have performed some of them in school and did not see any effect of sorcery, such as the intervention of jinn or the presence of talismans, etc. Please inform us; may Allah reward you.
A1: The science of chemistry studied by school students is not of the same kind as the chemistry that the scholars prohibited, and they said: it is sorcery, and they warned people against it, and they mentioned evidence for its invalidity and explained that it is also deception and illusion. Its practitioners claim that they turn, for example, iron into gold and copper into silver, and they thereby deceive people and consume their wealth unjustly. As for what is studied in schools in this time, it is the analysis of matter into the elements from which it is composed, or the transformation of elements into a substance composed of them whose properties differ from those of the elements, through manufacturing and operations performed on them. It is a factual reality, unlike the alleged chemistry, which is illusion and deception and is not of the types of sorcery that the texts in the Book and the Sunnah have prohibited and warned against. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
