The third question of Fatwa No. ( 1559 ):
Q3: The reasoning given for letting the beard grow and praying in one's sandals and other such matters is that it is a deviation from the ways of the Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians . So, do we abandon such rulings if those mentioned do them?
A3: The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Among his (peace and blessings be upon him) ways was that he let his beard grow and commanded it to be let grow. In doing so, he was obeying the command of Allah to follow in the footsteps of the messengers before him, among whom was Harun (peace be upon him), and upon our Prophet and him and all the prophets and messengers be prayers and peace. Harun had a beard. Allah the Exalted said:. As for the reasoning mentioned by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is to clarify their deviation from the guidance of the prophets and messengers before him. So he forbade following them in their deviation, and it is not
intended that the ruling is contingent on the presence or absence of the cause. If they let their beards grow, they are following in this particular matter the guidance of the messengers before them, the last of whom is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), whom Allah sent to the jinn and mankind. As for praying in sandals, they do not pray in their sandals based on the statement of Allah the Exalted addressed to Musa (peace be upon him):[Taha 20:12]. It is established that the legislation of those before us is legislation for us, unless there is an abrogation in our legislation. In this particular matter, abrogation has occurred by the action of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) of praying in the two sandals if they are pure, and his command to do so. The fact that they do not pray in their sandals is a deviation from the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), who is also their messenger, as evidenced by the statement of Allah the Exalted: [Saba 34:28]. And if they pray in their sandals, they are following his (peace and blessings be upon him) guidance. So it is not correct to abandon this Sunnah based on their agreement with us in what our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) legislated for us. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad , and his family and his Companions.
