Sufism and the Construction of Domes
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 6258 ):
Q1: What is the reality of Sufism? Does Sufism have good aspects and bad aspects? Is Sufism separate from Islamic jurisprudence? I ask you, may Allah reward you, to speak to me about the Prophetic Presence (Hadrat) that exists in the Sufi concept, and is it a reality? In Sudan , some of the Sufi men cite the construction of domes over the dead based on the dome built over the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). What is the ruling of the religion in that? What is the reality of these names: al-Ghawthi, al-Qutbi, and the men of the universe in the Sufi concept?
A1: First: Read the book [Madarij al-Salikin] by Ibn al-Qayyim
al-Jawziyyah, and the book [This is Sufism] by 'Abd al-Rahman al-Wakil regarding matters of Sufism. Second: There is no proof in erecting a dome over the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for those who use it as an excuse to build domes over the graves of the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous; because the erection of the dome over his grave was not by his bequest, nor was it the practice of his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), nor of the Tabi'un (the generation after the Companions), nor of any of the Imams of guidance in the early centuries which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) testified to as being good. Rather, that was from the people of innovation. It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو ردShall I not send you with what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me with? Do not leave any image except that you erase it, and do not leave any raised grave except that you level it
ألا أبعثك على ما بعثني عليه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم؟! ألا تدع تمثالاً إلاَّ طمسته، ولا قبرًا مشرفًا إلاَّ سويته
