The first question of Fatwa No. ( 6648 ):
Q1: What is the difference between the Shari'ah and the Tariqah?
A1: The Shari'ah is what Allah sent down in His books and sent His messengers to the people with, so that they may act upon it as an act of worship to Him and seeking nearness to Him through it, in accordance with what their messengers (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon them all) commanded them. The recognized Tariqah follows this, meaning: it follows the methodology of Allah that He sent down to the Seal of His messengers, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), by His saying:
And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way
My Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of them in the Fire except one. It was said: Who are they, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Those who are upon what I and my Companions are upon.
