Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question fifteen from Fatwa number ( 9414 ):
Q15: Whatis the meaning of the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
I asked my Lord, the Mighty and Sublime, for three things, of which He gave me two and did not grant me one. I asked my Lord not to destroy us with which he destroyed the nations before us, and He granted me that. And I asked my Lord not to let an enemy from without prevail over us, and He granted me that. And I asked my Lord not to divide us into warring factions and He did not grant me that.

A15: The hadith was narrated by al-Tirmidhi , who said: "It is a good, authentic hadith," and by al-Nasa'i , whose wording it is, and it was also narrated by Muslim from the hadith of Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him). The meaning of the hadith is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his Lord (Mighty and Majestic) for three matters for his Ummah: The first: that He not destroy them with what He destroyed previous nations with, such as drowning, wind, earthquake, and the casting of stones from the sky, and other types of great, general punishment. The second: that no enemy from outside them appear to them and make their lives lawful. The third: that they not be divided into sects. "Division" means mixing and disagreement based on desires. "Shi'a" is the plural of "Shi'ah," which means a faction. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that his Lord (Mighty and Majestic) favored him and answered his request for the first two, but withheld the third for a wisdom known to Him (Blessed and Exalted is He). And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
