The Shaykh : Then, after this phrase, which is the supplication for mercy upon those who transmit his hadith, the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
Three things ثلاثٌ
, meaning: three characteristics
the heart of a Muslim shall not be deceived لا يَغُلُّ عليهنَّ قلبُ امرئٍ مسلم
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2658Sahih (Darussalam)
; that is, he does not harbor resentment, from *ghill* which is resentment. It is not permissible to pronounce this verb in the form
He does not harbor resentment لا يُغِلُّ
- also -; in that case, the meaning changes; meaning he betrayed. *Aghalla* means he betrayed, *ghalla* means he envied and resented. Then he says:
He does not harbor resentment لا يَغُلُّ
, or
the heart of a Muslim shall not be deceived لا يُغِلُّ عليهنَّ قلبُ امرئٍ مسلم
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2658Sahih (Darussalam)
; that is: the heart of a Muslim man cannot find any *ghill* or resentment and envy in his heart toward the Muslims if these three following characteristics are present in his heart:
He said: First:
Sincerity of action for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) إخلاص العمل لله - عز وجل -
One of them is that it be pure for the Face of Allah,
Sincerity of Action for the Sake of Allah إخلاص العمل لله
that the one performing this action has been sincere in it for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), not seeking behind it a reward in this world, or fame, or reputation, or showing off, or anything similar to that which contradicts the Face of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). So this is the first characteristic; if it is present and realized in the heart of a Muslim along with the other three characteristics, he will not find in himself any *ghill* or resentment toward his Muslim brothers. The first characteristic is action for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) purely for Him.
And the second: giving sincere advice to the leaders of the Muslims; that is, to those who rule over them with what Allah has legislated from the Book of Allah and from the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). These leaders must be given sincere advice, and that is part of the religion, part of the completion of the religion, as in "Sahih Muslim" from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Religion is advice, religion is advice, religion is advice الدين النصيحة ، الدين النصيحة ، الدين النصيحة
. They said: For whom, O Messenger of Allah? He said:
To Allah, to His Book, To His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their masses. لله ، ولكتابه ، ولرسوله ، ولأئمة المسلمين وعامَّتهم
Sahih Muslim 55a
.
And if the Muslim is sincere to the Muslim leader who rules over them with the law of Islam, this will naturally be realized in the first and last characteristic, which is conjoined to his saying (peace be upon him):
And the leaders of the Muslims وأئمَّة المسلمين
. He said:
And the general Muslims وعامَّتهم
; that is: all the Muslims other than the leaders. The religion is not only to give sincere advice to Allah, and only to His Book, and only to His Messenger, and only to the leaders of the Muslims; but also - as well - to the general Muslims.
So this characteristic, if it is present in the heart of the Muslim along with the first characteristic, which is sincerity of action for Allah, and the second characteristic, sincerity and giving sincere advice to the Muslims.
