And likewise, if his trip is to a distant place, and on his way back he stops outside his town but at a short distance from it and spends the night there, is it permissible for him to shorten and combine the prayers?

The Shaykh : Yes. It is permissible for him to shorten and combine the prayers as long as he leaves the town and stays for one or two nights, for he is a traveler. Likewise, if he is returning from a journey and has a short distance left to reach his town, he may combine and shorten the prayers, because the dispensations of travel do not end until one reaches the town, just as the dispensations of travel do not begin until after one leaves the town. Yes.
