In your commentary on the abridged version of Sahih Muslim, you sometimes say: this word is not found in Sahih Muslim. How did such discrepancies arise?

The questioner : In a question, I mean, Shaykh, if you please:
In Sahih Muslim, you mention that in some hadiths you say: it is not found in Muslim. And what is this Muslim and this Muslim? How is that?

The Shaykh : This, may Allah bless you, is the abridged version of Muslim.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The one who compiled this abridgment is not the one who authored the original, namely Sahih Muslim. The one who authored Sahih Muslim is Imam Muslim, and the one who authored the abridgment of it is al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri, do you understand?

The questioner : So, who compiled it?

The Shaykh : Wait, wait, may Allah guide you!

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So you have understood, then, that the author of the abridgment is not the author of the original. The original is by Imam Muslim, and the abridgment is by al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri may slip up, may forget, may memorize well, or a word may drop out of it, and so on. So when we took this abridgment and decided to publish it for the people with some of the commentary that I saw, some differences appeared to us between the original and the abridgment. So, the requirement of scientific investigation is to refer back to the original, which is Sahih Muslim, and these discrepancies became clear to us, so we point out what we are able to.

The questioner : Is it all correct?

The Shaykh : I am not saying now that it is all correct. I am not saying that. I am answering you about what you asked; this is the reason.

The questioner : Peace be upon you, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The questioner : Shaykh, we will walk together, if Allah wills!

The Shaykh : How?

The questioner : We will walk together, if Allah wills.

The Shaykh : Yes, but we wait until Umm al-Fadl arrives!

The questioner : Ah, of course, yes, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : When she arrives, you will lead us.

The questioner : If Allah wills, may Allah preserve you.

The Shaykh : May Allah keep you safe.
