Continuation of the discussion on delaying the pre-dawn meal
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: So, food is only forbidden at the time when the Fajr prayer becomes permissible. There is no interval between the two matters; there is no abstention for a quarter of an hour, or less, or more, between the time the Fajr prayer becomes permissible and the time food becomes forbidden, ever. This is because the prayer becomes obligatory with the rising of the true dawn, and food becomes forbidden for the fasting person with the rising of the true dawn. So there is absolutely no separation between the two matters. Therefore, it came in the hadith agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, from the hadith of Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1094b, "Let not the adhan of Bilal deceive you," meaning the first adhan, of Ibn Umm Maktum, whose name was 'Amr, and he was blind. He is the one regarding whom the statement of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) was revealed: to the end of the verses. This is the one who used to give the second adhan, the adhan by which food becomes forbidden and the Fajr prayer becomes permissible. How did he give the adhan while he was blind? This is a question that naturally comes to the minds of some people. 'Amr ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) used to climb onto the roof of the mosque. He could not see the dawn, but he would wait for one of the passersby who passed by him. When they saw that the dawn had brightened and spread across the horizon, they would say to him, "You have reached the morning, you have reached the morning." At that point, he would give the adhan. So you observe here that the adhan of 'Amr ibn Umm Maktum was after the dawn had risen and the people had seen it while walking in the streets.
The student: Peace be upon you.
The Shaykh: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. So, when he was told, "You have reached the morning, you have reached the morning," he gave the adhan. So there is leeway in the matter, in that the mu'adhdhin used to delay his adhan until he heard the people saying to him, "You have reached the morning, you have reached the morning." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) told the truth when He said in the end of those verses related to fasting: [Al-Baqarah 2:185]. So, among the reprehensible jurisprudence that contradicts this Sunnah is for someone to say that if the fasting person hears the adhan and has a mouthful of food in his mouth, he must spit it out. This is excessive strictness and extremism in the religion. The Lord of the worlds has admonished us and reminded us in His Book and in the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not to be extreme in our religion. He mentioned in the Noble Qur'an, saying: [An-Nisa 4:171]. And our Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said to us: Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 7:347, or he said (peace be upon him): Sahih Muslim 1337b. So, if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has clarified for us that there is leeway and room in the matter of the pre-dawn meal for the one who is eating it, to the extent that he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 2350Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani), then this is a defiance of Allah and the Messenger for a person to say to the one who heard the adhan and has a mouthful of food in his mouth, "Spit it out and throw it on the ground." This is not from the Sunnah; rather, this is contrary to the Sunnah and contrary to the explicit command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). I have been asked about this many times, so I do not leave room for directing such a question. I present to you in advance that this hadith is found in the most famous books of the Sunnah, among which is "Sunan Abu Dawud," which is the third of the six famous books. The first is "Sahih al-Bukhari," the second is "Sahih Muslim," and the third is "Sunan Abu Dawud." This hadith is found in it. Also, Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim narrated it in his "Mustadrak," and also Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him), the Imam of the Sunnah, extracted it in his great book known as "Musnad al-Imam Ahmad." So this hadith is not among the rare hadiths, but it is among the famous hadiths narrated by the Imams of the Sunnah of the early generations with a sound chain. And here I conclude this speech, perhaps one of you has a question so we can answer it, if Allah wills. I conclude this speech with his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:48, and in a narration: Bulugh al-Maram 2:341. Two narrations, as He loves Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:48, the second narration is Bulugh al-Maram 2:341. Therefore, it is not befitting for the Muslim to be scrupulous with cold scrupulousness and to disdain obeying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what he encouraged us to do and granted us a dispensation for.
This is sufficient, and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
The student : May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh: And to you. If anyone has a question or a point of difficulty, we ask Allah to grant us success in answering it, if Allah wills.
Yes.
The Adhan of Bilal should not mislead you
For he only gives the adhan so that the sleeper may rise and the one who is eating the pre-dawn meal may eat. So eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum gives the adhan
He frowned and turned away, because the blind man came to him.
The student: Peace be upon you.
The Shaykh: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. So, when he was told, "You have reached the morning, you have reached the morning," he gave the adhan. So there is leeway in the matter, in that the mu'adhdhin used to delay his adhan until he heard the people saying to him, "You have reached the morning, you have reached the morning." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you hear the call to prayer and the vessel is in the hand of one of you, let him not put it down until he has finished his need from it
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth.
Beware of extremism in the religion; for indeed, those before you were destroyed by their extremism in their religion
Verily the people before you went to their doom
When any of you hears the summons to prayer while he has a vessel in his hand, he should not lay it down till he fulfils his need.
Indeed, Allah loves that His dispensations be taken, just as He loves that His strict rulings be taken
إن الله يحب أن تُؤتى رُخَصُه كما يحب أن تُؤتى عزائمهjust as he dislikes that disobedience to Him be committed
Indeed, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) loves that His dispensations be taken, just as He loves that His strict rulings be taken
إن الله - عز وجل - يحب أن تُؤتى رُخَصُه كما يحب أن تُؤتى عزائمهjust as he dislikes that disobedience to Him be committed
This is sufficient, and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
