Is it true that if a person repeats theft, his hand and his leg are cut off from the opposite side?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Our Shaykh, regarding a man who has repeated theft, we know that it is mentioned in some books of Islamic jurisprudence, such as al-Qurtubi’s Tafsir, that in the first instance, if he steals, his hand is cut off, and then his leg from the opposite side. It is also mentioned that some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did this. What is the stronger position among the scholars regarding one who repeats theft, and how should he be dealt with?

The Shaykh : We know of nothing other than this.

The questioner : Meaning, it is cut off from the opposite side.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : And may He reward you.
