The questioner : He saysThe questioner : What is the ruling on dyeing the beard with henna for a man whose beard is pure white? Is it obligatory or a recommended practice?

The Shaykh : Dyeing is obligatory in general; that is, anyone who has gray hair must dye it with any color of henna or katam, except black. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their hair), so differ from them. إن اليهود والنصارى لا يصبغون شعورهم ؛ فخالفوهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
. In some narrations, the word "hair" is not mentioned, but this is the intended meaning; because the point here is not that they do not dye their clothes,
The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their hair), so differ from them. إن اليهود والنصارى لا يصبغون شعورهم فخالفوهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
.

Another questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes?
The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their hair), so differ from them. إن اليهود والنصارى لا يصبغون شعورهم فخالفوهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
. In this hadith, there is a command to dye the hair of the beard or the head. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) explicitly stated that this dyeing is obligatory, because the command implies obligation, especially since it was accompanied by the teaching of the Messenger (peace be upon him) of this matter with his saying:
So differ from them. فخالفوهم
. Please proceed. So, this dyeing is obligatory for a man whose hair on his head or beard has turned gray. However, I do not believe it is obligatory for the gray-haired man to keep chasing his beard or hair with dye; renewing the dye every time the previous dye fades. Because the command in the previous hadith is absolute, and the absoluteness is sufficient to implement it several times, such that he achieves the goal of differing from the Jews and Christians who do not dye at all. So he dyes absolutely, without a specific limit, such that whenever the dye ends, he adds new dye, so he is always a man with a dyed beard. This is not derived from the hadith. Rather, he should make it a habit to dye in this way to strongly differ from the Jews and the Christians.
This is the answer to the previous question.
