Ruling on Shaving the Beard and Dyeing the Hair

This message received by the program from a student of knowledge, to whom we had promised to complete his questions in this episode. The second question in the letter from the brother, the student of knowledge, says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 5892, and regarding the father of Abu Bakr, he said: . What is the ruling on dyeing hair for women and men if this hadith is authentic? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon His servant and messenger, His choice from among His creation, and His trustee over His revelation, our Prophet, our Imam, and our Master Muhammad ibn Abdullah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his path and is guided by his guidance until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: These two hadiths are authentic and established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The first is from the hadith of Ibn Umar. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:, and in another wording: . It is agreed upon as authentic from the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 260. This indicates the obligation to honor the beard, let it grow, leave it long, and let it hang down, and that it is not permissible for a Muslim to cut it or shave it. As for what has happened to many people today, it is painful and saddening, and a Muslim should not imitate anyone in that, for the model is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who followed his path from among the people of good. As for one who contradicts the path of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his command by shaving the beard or cutting it, he is not a model to follow. Rather, he should be advised, indeed it is obligatory to advise him, and to declare his action wrong, and to direct him to good, and not to imitate him.
As for the mustache, it is obligatory to cut it and shave it and not to let it grow long, because letting it grow long is imitating the polytheists, especially the Zoroastrians, for they let their mustaches grow long. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to cut it and commanded to shave it. Abu Muhammad ibn Hazm said—and he is one of the great ones known for knowing the opinions of the scholars: "The scholars agreed that letting the beard grow and shaving the mustache is an obligatory matter." He reported the consensus that shaving the mustache is obligatory, and that letting the beard grow is an obligatory matter. Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to contradict the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the consensus of the scholars in that.
As for the second hadith, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the story of the father of Abu Bakr:, the wording of the hadith is not like that. The wording of the hadith is: . The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: . Muslim narrated it in his Sahih and others. The meaning of this hadith is the indication that gray hair is to be changed, and that the Sunnah is to change it. From this is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam). So it is the Sunnah for a Muslim to change his gray hair, and likewise a woman changes her gray hair, but not with black. For this reason he said: . So the gray hair is changed with red, yellow, or black mixed with red, and there is no harm in that. Abu Bakr and Umar used to dye with henna and katam. It was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he dyed with henna and katam, meaning: with black mixed with katam. It is dyed black, and henna is red, so when they are combined they become black with a red tint. So if one dyes with black mixed with red, there is no harm. As for pure black, it is not permissible because of this hadith and other hadiths that came with the meaning indicating the prohibition of dyeing with black. From this is what Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i and a group narrated with a sound chain from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 4212Sahih (Al-Albani). This is a great warning that necessitates caution. Yes.
