A benefit concerning the sayings of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And with this, we should take a benefit, which is that the sayings of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) must be interpreted by his actions (peace and blessings be upon him). The Sunnah is clarified by the practical Sunnah.
‘Urge your dying ones to say La ilaha illallah.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 1444Sahih (Darussalam)
As you heard earlier, it is said that in the presence of the dying person, he says: "There is no god but Allah," and he does not address him by saying: "Say: There is no god but Allah." So the practical Sunnah came to clarify that the intention of:
Teach your dead
is only that he is ordered to say: "There is no god but Allah." This is what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did when he visited this Jewish boy who used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was a Jew, the son of a Jew, but the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most noble of people in character. Even though this boy was a Jew, he visited him. However, he (peace and blessings be upon him) seized every opportunity to convey knowledge and religion to the people, so he took this opportunity and said to him:
Say: La ilaha illallah
Sahih al-Bukhari 6681
And over the boy’s head was his Jewish father. The boy looked at his father as if saying to him: "What do you think? Here you are, hearing Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say to me: 'Say: There is no god but Allah.'" So the wicked one—and this is the condition of the disbelievers, as the Exalted said:
know him as they know their own sons
[Al-Baqarah 2:146]
He knows that the call of the Messenger is the truth, but as He also said in the other verse:
And they rejected them, while their [inner] selves were convinced thereof
[An-Naml 27:14]
When the Jewish father saw his son on the path of death and that he had no life after that, he said to him: "Obey Abu al-Qasim." Abu al-Qasim was saying to the son of the Jew: "Say: There is no god but Allah." And the Jewish father disbelieved in "There is no god but Allah." But when he saw his son that he was on the path of death and there was no salvation for him if he died a Jew, he said to him: "Obey Abu al-Qasim." As for him, he remained disobedient to Abu al-Qasim out of stubbornness, disbelief, and misguidance. The point is: the boy said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," and his soul departed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Praise be to Allah who saved me from the Fire by you
This is the prescribed teaching (ta'leem) that it is said to the dying person: "Say: There is no god but Allah." As for teaching him while he is in his grave, it does not benefit him at all, whether at the time of his burial or after his burial. He is dead, he has no movement, and he does not hear what is taught to him. Even if he heard, he would not respond, because he has gone out with what he acquired in this world of faith and good deeds, or disbelief and evil deeds. I ask Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) to guide us to understand Islam with a correct understanding and to grant us beneficial knowledge. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive. And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
