The Shaykh : Abu Mazhura, this Companion who was the mu'adhdhin for the Prophet (peace be upon him), narrates to us the following story that took place between 'Umar and another Companion. Abu Mazhura says:
Safwan then excused himself, saying: "By Allah, we do not disdain them, but we prefer to keep [the food] for ourselves. By Allah, we do not find good food that is enough for us to eat and to feed them." In reality, this is a display of nobility from Safwan, contrary to what some minds might perceive as an excuse for a mistake he made. It is not that. He is saying that it is not possible for him to have good food that is sufficient for him, his household, and his slaves as well. Now that this large dish of food has become available to him, he brought it exclusively for the poor and the needy. So, he did not sit with them or eat with them out of arrogance or pride, but rather to single them out for this good food and not to share it with them. This, in reality, indicates a noble and generous soul, the height of generosity, because he specifically designated the slaves to eat from this good food and did not share it with them so that they could eat and be full ... from it. Thus, this report from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) indicates that he detests with the strongest detestation a master elevating himself above sharing food and drink with his slaves, let alone with his free servant. This, in reality, is part of the nobility of Islam in linking the members of the Muslim community, where there is no distinction between master and servant, between free and slave; they all sit at one table and eat from one food. This is the height of justice among all Muslims. The second hadith is in the third chapter after the hundredth chapter, "When a slave advises his master."
The student : We said the hadith, it says the report, that the person.
The Shaykh: How so?
The student : The hadith indicates that the person should prefer himself over others.
The Shaykh : He should prefer others over himself.
The student : Himself, meaning he is saying, "But we prefer to keep [the food] for ourselves. By Allah, we do not find good food that is enough for us to eat and to feed them." Meaning, if he does not have [enough], he eats, is it permissible for him, is it permissible for him to eat.
The Shaykh : It is permissible.
The student : He does not feed others.
The Shaykh : Because this passage is clarified by the previous hadith:. He said: "Do I have another?" He said: . He said: "Do I have another?" He said: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 197.
It is permissible, of course, but the important point here is that there are two issues in the story of 'Umar: The first issue is that 'Umar encourages masters to share food with their slaves. The second issue is that Safwan ibn Umayyah did not disdain sharing food with them out of arrogance and pride, but rather because he found good food and he designated it for them. This is the reason he did not sit with them. However, if the master does not have anything other than what is sufficient for himself and his family, and he feeds his slave food that is less than that, then it is permissible, of course.
I was sitting with 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Safwan ibn Umayyah came. Safwan is also a Companion, so the story revolves around these three Companions: Abu Mazhura the narrator, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab the one directing, and Safwan ibn Umayyah who was present for this story. He said: "I was sitting with 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Safwan ibn Umayyah came with a large dish. The large dish is a bowl, or in the general meaning known today, a large pot." "He came with a large dish carried by several people in a cloak." Because of the size of this large dish, it could not be carried by two people; rather, they would spread out the large cloak, hold it by its four corners, lift the large dish, and carry it to the required place. "When Safwan ibn Umayyah came with a large dish carried by several people in a cloak, they placed it in front of 'Umar. 'Umar called for some poor people and slaves from the slaves around him." Slaves means slaves, as is known. "So they ate with him." The Commander of the Faithful sat and ate with the poor and the slaves from that large dish, which is the large dish. Then 'Umar said at that time: "May Allah act against a people - or he said: May Allah destroy a people -." "May Allah act against a people" means He will take revenge on them, or he said: "May Allah destroy a people," meaning He will uproot them and destroy them. The summary is that 'Umar is cursing these people. What is their description? He said: "They disdain their slaves eating with them." So 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) disapproves of masters who do not sit with their slaves to eat with them. Safwan ibn Umayyah was from the nobles of the Arabs and was famous for feeding people. It appears that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) noticed that Safwan, who came with that large dish containing food, did this as a favor and feeding for the poor, the needy, and the slaves. But it appears that Safwan did not sit with the group as 'Umar did, so 'Umar cursed the masters who do not sit with their slaves and do not eat with them. He said: "May Allah act against a people - or May Allah destroy a people - who disdain their slaves eating with them."

The Shaykh : Because this passage is clarified by the previous hadith:
Spend it on yourself
Spend it on your wife
Spend it on your servant and then on whomever you see fit.
It is permissible, of course, but the important point here is that there are two issues in the story of 'Umar: The first issue is that 'Umar encourages masters to share food with their slaves.
