Explanation of the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): (Whoever seeks refuge in Allah, then give him refuge...)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) confirms some of what came in the previous hadith with the hadith that follows it, which is from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The author narrated it from him with a valid chain. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Anyone who seeks refuge in Allah will find refuge with Him. Anyone who asks from Allah will be receive. Anyone who does a favour should repay it. If you do not find anything, then make supplication for the doer of the favour so that he knows that you have repaid him.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 216
. This hadith also contains other etiquettes in addition to the previous etiquette, which is to mention those who have done us good with good words and praise when we are unable to reward them with something equal to what they rewarded us with. However, the Messenger (peace be upon him) added other benefits to this hadith, saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If anyone asks (you) for refuge for the sake of Allah, give him refuge
Sunan Abi Dawud 5108Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
. What does "whoever seeks refuge in Allah, then give him refuge" mean? We all know that seeking refuge in other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is not permissible, because no one protects from evil and harm except Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). Therefore, we are commanded in the Noble Qur'an, when we recite the words of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), to say:
I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the accursed Shaytan, from his whispering, his blowing, and his puffing.
Sunan ad-Darimi 2:55
. Since seeking refuge is only from Allah, if one of us seeks refuge in someone else, we should give him refuge because he sought refuge in the Great One, namely Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). So the Messenger (peace be upon him) commands us that whoever seeks refuge in us in Allah (Mighty and Majestic), we should give him refuge. Perhaps the best practical example from what is established in the authentic Sunnah that explains this part of this hadith is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If anyone asks you refuge for Allah’s sake give him refuge
Sunan Abi Dawud 5109Sahih (Al-Albani)
. This is what Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his "Sahih" from the Lady Aisha and others of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married a woman known as the daughter of al-Junn or the woman of al-Junn. When he entered upon her and approached her, he said (peace and blessings be upon him) to her:
Give yourself to me.
. She said: "Do kings give themselves to the common people? I seek refuge in Allah from you." This woman, it seems, was from a lineage of houses that claimed descent from kings, so she viewed herself as having honor and nobility. She hinted at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he did not know that he was from the sons of kings. So she said: "Does a queen give herself to the common people?" meaning the general people who are usually driven by the kings. "I seek refuge in Allah from you." What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do but say to her:
You have sought refuge in a Great One.
, and in another narration:
You have sought refuge with a great one, O Ma'adh, return to your family.
. So he sent her away and separated from her, merely because she sought refuge in Allah; because she sought refuge in the Great One, as he said (peace and blessings be upon him). So he sent her away and was completely free of her, even though she was among the most beautiful women of her time. So
If anyone asks (you) for refuge for the sake of Allah, give him refuge
Sunan Abi Dawud 5108Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
, it is necessary that any person who seeks refuge in Allah from something, we must help him and give him refuge from what he sought refuge from, as far as we are able to do so.

The questioner: Maryam, the daughter of 'Imran
She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah."
[Maryam 19:18]
.

The Shaykh : What is Simon saying? What are you saying?

The questioner: Maryam...
She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah."
[Maryam 19:18]
.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Did you hear what she said?

The questioner: The Lady Maryam, when she said:
Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah." إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيًّا
[Maryam 19:18]
.

The Shaykh : Did you hear what the father said?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : What did Gabriel do with her? Did he give her refuge or did he not give her refuge? Because the problem is not in Maryam's word; the problem, if there is a problem, is to see what Gabriel's position was, from whom Maryam sought refuge, do you understand? I mean, for example, if I say to a person "I seek refuge in Allah from you," it is no longer permissible for him to talk to me, so I am not the one who is wrong; the one who is wrong is if he continues to talk to me. Here, in the story of Maryam, Maryam said: "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you if you should be pious," because Gabriel (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Maryam in the form of a human being
Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.
[Maryam 19:17]
, and where was she? She was in her seclusion, having distanced herself from all people, women and men. So when she was surprised by a human being, it naturally occurred to this woman, especially when she is a noble and righteous woman like Maryam, that this person did not come except for evil. So she said to him:
Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah." إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيًّا
[Maryam 19:18]
. So the prohibited thing would be if the one from whom refuge is sought here was an ordinary person, and he wanted to implement this hadith:
And whoever seeks your refuge with Allah, grant them refuge.
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 15:76
. If he wanted to implement this seeking of refuge and he came with a bad intention to turn away from her, do you understand the issue? But the truth is that Gabriel, who is from the angels, rather from the chiefs of the angels whom Allah (Mighty and Majestic) described with His saying:
they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.
[At-Tahrim 66:6]
; and therefore he answered her with his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
(18) She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah." (19) He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy."
[Maryam 19:18-19]
. At that time, Maryam's heart became pure and she knew that he was a messenger of Allah, meaning an angel from the angels of Allah sent to her to give her glad tidings of 'Isa (peace and blessings be upon him). So the issue of Maryam's seeking refuge has no relation to this topic, because the hadith only speaks about what the one from whom refuge is sought must do; he must give refuge, meaning he must fulfill the desire of the one seeking refuge, as came in the complete hadith:
and if anyone asks you (for something) for Allah’s sake, give him
Sunan Abi Dawud 5109Sahih (Al-Albani)
. So if one asks us by Allah, what is necessary? We give him his request and his desire. So Maryam (peace and blessings be upon her) sought refuge from Gabriel, supposing first that he was a human being, and secondly that he was a human being with bad intentions. So she said:
She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah."
[Maryam 19:18]
. But Gabriel gave her glad tidings contrary to what was in her mind and her thoughts, that Allah sent her a messenger to give her glad tidings that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) would provide her with a boy without a father. So this is the first etiquette in this hadith, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If anyone asks (you) for refuge for the sake of Allah, give him refuge
Sunan Abi Dawud 5108Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And the appropriate example is the story of the daughter of al-Junn whom the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed to. When she was brought to him and he entered upon her, she said: "I seek refuge in Allah from you." So he sent her away and said to her:
You have sought refuge with a great one, by Ma'adh.
