The Shaykh : The chapter that follows, which is the twenty-third chapter after the one hundredth, the author (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"The chapter on pardoning and forgiving people".
He narrated it with his authentic chain of narration.
From AnasAl-Adab Al-Mufrad 243.
This is a famous story in the history of the Prophetic biography. It is that a Jewish woman came to the Messenger (peace be upon him) with a poisoned sheep, meaning roasted and poisoned. She brought this sheep, specifically this leg of the sheep, which was poisoned, and presented it to the Messenger (peace be upon him) as a gift. The Messenger (peace be upon him) ate from it, and the effect of the poison appeared in the sheep in that incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after putting the first mouthful in his mouth, received revelation that it was a poisoned sheep. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) ordered his companions who were with him to hold back and not eat. He said, "This leg is informing me that it is poisoned," so the people stopped. Among them was one of the Companions who had eaten with the Messenger (peace be upon him); the mouthful had reached his stomach, so he was affected by it and died. As for the Messenger (peace be upon him), he was not affected by that meal he ate from that poisoned sheep in a way that would lead to his immediate death. Rather, the effect of that mouthful appeared in his body (peace be upon him) over time. To this points Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in his saying:Sahih Muslim 2190a "Luhawat" is the plural of "luha," which is the small tongue in the throat here, which we know blocks the airway so that the mouthful does not enter the airway but takes the natural path. So this uvula appears to be a sensitive piece of flesh. When the poison touched it, it weakened it. So Anas says, "I used to find the effect of that poisoned mouthful in the uvula of the Messenger (peace be upon him)." This was either by his voice (peace be upon him) becoming hoarse at times due to the effect of that poison, or by him being afflicted with some swelling, as happens to small children and others, and the like. The Messenger (peace be upon him) informed in his illness of death that he had not ceased to feel the effect of that poisoned mouthful until he felt its effect in his illness of death. He said: Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:663 Meaning the severing of a vein from his veins (peace be upon him). So his eating (peace be upon him) from this sheep affected him over time until he died from it after a period of one or two years. Therefore, some scholars consider the Messenger (peace be upon him) to have died a martyr because of this poison that that Jewish woman put in the leg of the poisoned sheep. And here in this hadith is a report where the reports conflict. It is that the companions of the Messenger (peace be upon him) asked him after the Messenger (peace be upon him) knew, by the speech of the sheep's leg, that it was poisoned, and after the death of one of the Companions due to eating from it, that this Jewish woman had betrayed him (peace be upon him) and intended to kill him and get rid of him. So he sent for her, and she confessed that she had placed the poison intentionally and deliberately. He asked her for the reason, and she said: "I said: If he is truthful in his claim of prophethood and messengership, the poison will not harm him. And if he is a liar, we will get rid of him."
