The questioner : The questioner says: Is it true that some of the Salaf criticized or did not agree with 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar on his absolute following of everything the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did of the Sunnahs and other matters, and what is their argument in that?
The Shaykh : This issue must be clarified for the brothers. Before 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was among the most rigorous people in seeking to follow the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, he (may Allah be pleased with him) would seek out the places where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to relieve himself, so he would dismount, rest his camel, dismount, and relieve himself. However, the rest of the Companions disagreed with 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar on this matter he followed. They said that what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did is divided into three categories: First, what occurred by coincidence; second, what he did as an act of worship; and third, what was not in this state. What he did by coincidence is not a proof and is not among the limits of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that He has set for His servants. What he did as an act of worship, the original ruling is that we follow him in it. And what falls outside of these two is in between them until it becomes clear whether it is to be classified with acts of worship or otherwise. An example of what he did by coincidence is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Makkah during the Farewell Pilgrimage on the morning of Sunday, corresponding to the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained praying the four-rak'ah prayers as two rak'ahs until he went out to Mina and returned to Madinah. His arrival in Makkah on this day, the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah, did it occur intentionally or by coincidence? The meaning of "by coincidence" is by chance without intention. There is no doubt that it occurred by coincidence, and that if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had hastened his journey, he would have arrived in Makkah before the fourth day, and if he had slowed his journey, he would have arrived in Makkah after the fourth day. So we know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not intend to shorten the prayer on this specific day. Some scholars hold that this story is what determines the time at which the ruling of travel is cut off, and that the man...
