Following the ruling on what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did.

The Shaykh : Now, my brothers, let us return to our previous discussion. We say that what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did by consensus contains no evidence of worship, because no indication of worship appeared in it. However, what he did by way of worship, we are commanded to follow. As for what is ambiguous between the two, you will find that scholars differ on it. One such case is the styling of hair, meaning the hair on the head. Is it recommended for a person, I mean a man, to style his head hair, or is it recommended to shave it? Some scholars hold that styling the hair is a recommended practice (sunnah) because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not shave his head except during Hajj or 'Umrah. Others held that it is not a recommended practice, but rather a custom. However, if the custom of the country is to style the hair, then do so; otherwise, do not. After this, we say that Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), due to his extreme scrupulousness in adhering to the Sunnah, followed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) even in what was done by consensus. But the correct view is contrary to his action (may Allah be pleased with him), which is what the majority of the Companions held: that what was done by consensus is not something by which we worship Allah the Exalted. We worship Allah only with what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did as worship of Allah the Exalted, and to encourage the community.
