The Shaykh : Today we studied in the chapter forty-five after the hundred, which is: "The chapter on the believer not being the one who slanders." We had studied the first hadith from it and passed over the second hadith, and we mentioned that its beginning is authentic through a route other than this one. Now we read to you the third hadith from it, and its chain of narration is authentic. From Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): That the Jews came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "As-sam 'alaykum" — what is the greeting? — "As-sam 'alaykum," so Aisha said: "Wa 'alaykum wa la'anakum Allah wa ghadiba Allah 'alaykum." He said — meaning the Messenger (peace be upon him) —: مَهلًا يَا عَائِشَةُ ؛ عَلَيكِ بالرِّفْقِ ، وإِيَّاكِ والعُنْفَ والفُحْشَ Easy, 'A'isha, you must be gentle. Beware of harshness and coarseness.Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 311 I said: "Did you not hear what they said?" Haven't you heard what I have said (to them)? I said the same to them, and my invocation against them will be accepted while theirs against me will be rejected (by Allah).Sahih al-Bukhari 6030.
In this hadith there are Islamic etiquettes, some of which relate to the Muslim in his character, and some relate to the Muslim in terms of his relationship with the disbeliever, when the disbeliever greets him with a greeting that has been distorted from what it was established for, and in the Shami expression: "poisoned words." This is what those Jews did when they came to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); it appears they came while he was in the house of Aisha, so they greeted with a greeting, as we hinted, twisting their tongues and misleading the Messenger (peace be upon him) and those with him into thinking they were greeting him with the lawful greeting, but in reality they turned the greeting into a curse upon the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in their language, where they said: "As-sam," and the meaning of "as-sam" is death, as it came in some hadiths: في الحبَّة السوداء شفاءٌ من كلِّ داء إلا السَّام وهو الموت There is healing in black cumin for all diseases except death.Sahih al-Bukhari 5688. So they, meaning the Jews, out of their wickedness and their plotting, twisted their tongues with the greeting and said: "As-sam 'alaykum." That was not hidden from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and he is the master of the most pious and the most intelligent, and therefore he did not respond to their ugly speech except by saying to them: وعليكم And upon you. As for the Lady Aisha, she did not endure their plotting and wickedness, and that appeared strongly in her response to them with what she heard, from her saying: "Wa 'alaykum." She realized and responded with the same response as the Messenger (peace be upon him), but she added and said: "Wa la'anakum Allah wa ghadiba Allah 'alaykum." The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not like her response, and the reason for that goes back to two matters, one of which relates to an Islamic principle and the other relates to her and her person.
As for the first: the Islamic principle is His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He): فَمَنِ اعْتَدَى عَلَيْكُمْ فَاعْتَدُوا عَلَيْهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا اعْتَدَى عَلَيْكُمْ So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you[Al-Baqarah 2:194]. If the Jews said: "As-sam 'alaykum," then we say: "Wa 'alaykum," and we do not add to their excess by saying, as the Lady Aisha said: "Wa la'anakum Allah wa ghadiba Allah 'alaykum." This is the first matter, and this is a known principle in Islam that it is not permissible to add to... and to take revenge, but only with the like. So he said to her, being polite: مهلًا يا عائشة ، عليك بالرِّفق ، وإياك والعنفَ والشدة والفحش في الكلام Easy, 'A'isha, you must be gentle. Beware of harshness and coarseness.Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 311. She said: "Did you not hear what they said?" He said (peace be upon him): أو لم تسمعي ما قلت ؟ Haven't you heard what I have saidSahih al-Bukhari 6030. It is as if he (peace be upon him) wanted her to be more steadfast than she was. Then he says to her: I heard what you heard, and I responded as you responded, so just as you said "Wa 'alaykum," I said "Wa 'alaykum," so why do you add to what I responded to them with? Therefore he ordered her to be gentle and forbade her from violence, and obscenity in speech is the speech of the obscene in words that is not permissible to dominate the tongue. Haven't you heard what I have said (to them)? I said the same to themSahih al-Bukhari 6030. Like for like, thus he says (peace be upon him): I responded to them with like for like, They said: "As-sam 'alaykum," so I said: "Wa 'alaykum," so it is answered for me regarding them, and it is not answered for them regarding me.. If the Jews curse the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) with an unjust, oppressive, and harmful curse, then that is among what is not answered by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) regarding the Messenger (peace be upon him). But the opposite, yes, if the Messenger (peace be upon him) curses them, his supplication is answered by his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He).
