The Shaykh: And as I mentioned in the previous lesson, the difference of the young Muslim today is that he hardly hears a question directed to a man of knowledge without intruding and rushing to answer before the question is put to him. Ibn 'Umar was not like that, for he grew up, was raised, and graduated from the school of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that school which teaches etiquette along with knowledge. So it was placed in the heart of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar that it was the date palm, but he kept it to himself and did not reveal it to them out of etiquette. He said: "It came to mind that it was the date palm, and I disliked to speak." Why? He said: "And there were Abu Bakr and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab." There in the gathering was Abu Bakr, the best of the Companions of the Messenger (peace be upon him) in that regard, and there was his father, who was better than him in knowledge and age, so how could he speak?! Ibn 'Umar said: "When they did not speak, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answered the question he had posed to the Companions by saying: .
Ibn 'Umar said: "When I went out with my father, I said: O my father, the date palm came to mind." After the gathering had dispersed, 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar revealed what had been placed in his heart, namely that it was the date palm. Here, something of sadness, grief, and contraction overtook his father, which is expressed by the saying of 'Umar:Sahih al-Bukhari 6144: meaning from what people love, such as wealth and status, and so on. For in this situation, it would appear that Ibn 'Umar, who was young in age, was appearing before the Companions as one of great intellect if he had explicitly stated that it was the date palm. However, Ibn 'Umar affirmed the reason that prevented him from speaking about this blessing that Allah had bestowed upon him, where he understood the words of the Messenger (peace be upon him) which the senior Companions had not understood. So he said, with etiquette and apology, in various forms of politeness: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 360: Since you and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq were silent and did not speak, I am going to be silent and not speak, all the more so.
It is the date palm
هي النخلةIbn 'Umar said: "When I went out with my father, I said: O my father, the date palm came to mind." After the gathering had dispersed, 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar revealed what had been placed in his heart, namely that it was the date palm. Here, something of sadness, grief, and contraction overtook his father, which is expressed by the saying of 'Umar:
Narrated Ibn `Umar: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Inform me of a tree which resembles a Muslim, giving its fruits at every season by the permission of its Lord, and the leaves of which do not fall." I thought of the date-palm tree, but I disliked to speak because Abu Bakr and `Umar were present there. When nobody spoke, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It is the date-palm tree" When I came out with my father, I said, "O father! It came to my mind that it was the date-palm tree." He said, "What prevented you from saying it?" Had you said it, it would have been more dearer to me than such-and-such a thing (fortune)." I said, "Nothing prevented me but the fact that neither you nor Abu Bakr spoke, so I disliked to speak (in your presence).
ما منعك أن تقولها ؟! لو كنت قلتها كان أحب إليّ من كذا وكذاWhat kept me from doing so was that I did not see you or Abu Bakr speak, so I did not like to speak out.
ما منعني إلا لم أرَكَ ولا أبا بكر تكلَّمتما فكرهت
