Continuation of the benefits of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: He said, "Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and Abu Bakr was appointed as his successor, and those among the Arabs who disbelieved did so, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said to Abu Bakr..."

The Shaykh : ...and it is not suitable for the Muslims, and it brings humiliation upon the Muslims, because it is among the conditions that if any of them come to the Muslims, the Muslims must return them to them, even if they are Muslim, and if any of us go to them, they do not return them. This was difficult for the Muslims, so they reconsidered. 'Umar reconsidered, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded to him, and then he came to Abu Bakr and responded to him exactly as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had responded, word for word. Likewise, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) died, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up in the mosque and said, "The Messenger of Allah has not died; he has only fainted. Allah will surely revive him, and I will cut off the hands and feet of some people from the opposite side." Then Abu Bakr came, and he was more grieved than 'Umar. He entered the house and realized that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had died, then he came out to the people and found 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) among them roaring like a camel. He said to him, "Be careful, wait a moment." Then he ascended the pulpit and delivered the famous, eloquent sermon, saying: "As for what follows, whoever used to worship Muhammad, then Muhammad has died, and whoever used to worship Allah, then Allah is alive and does not die." Then he recited:
Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all وما محمد إلا رسول قد خلت من قبله الرسل أفإن مات أو قتل انقلبتم على أعقابكم ومن ينقلب على عقبيه فلن يضر الله شيئا
[Ali 'Imran 3:144]
'Umar said: "So I knew that he had died, and I could not stand; I was weak and stumbled until my legs could not support me." This is another station. The third is the station of Abu Bakr in fighting the people of apostasy. You know that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or rather before the station of Abu Bakr in executing the army of Usamah, Usamah ibn Zayd, whose father was killed in the Battle of Mu'tah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prepared an army to fight the Romans and appointed Usamah ibn Zayd as its leader, although he was young in age, but considering that his father was the one who was killed, this was to console him, as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did with Qays ibn Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah in the Year of the Conquest, the conquest of Makkah. When Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
Today the Ka'bah is made lawful! So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Sa'd lies; today the Ka'bah is honored." اليوم تستحل الكعبة ! فقال الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم كذب سعد ، اليوم تعظم الكعبة
because the Muslims, its owners, are occupying it, and the people most deserving of it are its inhabitants, and he had the banner with him, so he removed him, took the banner from him, and gave it to his son Qays, meaning he did not remove it from him for long. This is from the wisdom of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The important point is that he executed the army under the leadership of Usamah ibn Zayd, and it was outside Madinah. When the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became severe, the army stopped. When he died, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) resolved to execute the army. So the Companions came to him, including 'Umar, and they said, "O Abu Bakr, how will you execute the army when the people have now apostatized? The Arabs now will tire us out." He said, "By Allah, I will not sheathe a sword, or he said: I will not lower a banner that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) tied and resolved to raise, and in that was much good. When the Arabs saw that the Companions, after the Messenger, executed the armies to Sham, they said, "These people have strength," so they feared and were wary of disobedience, and this action served the purpose of fighting. As for the fourth issue, it is this: Abu Bakr resolved to fight those who withheld zakah, so 'Umar reconsidered him in this, but he swore that he would fight those who separate between prayer and zakah, so he fought them, and, praise be to Allah, much good resulted, and many of them returned to Islam. The point of this hadith is his saying: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: There is no god but Allah. And when they say it, their blood and self are safe from me, except for what is due." Meaning: It is not enough to say: There is no god but Allah, but "There is no god but Allah" is the key to safety. Then, if he upholds the right of Islam, he is [safe], and if he does not uphold the right of Islam, he is treated as this disobedience requires.
