Continuation of the explanation of the athar of Qays ibn 'Asim: (… and hold on to wealth and its acquisition…)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Among the things this wise man said to his children was: "And hold on to wealth and its acquisition." By wealth here is meant everything that has value, not just a specific amount. He is admonishing his children not to be a burden on people. He is admonishing and advising them to have earned wealth from which they can sustain themselves and not need anyone else. Why? He said: "Because it is a distinction for the noble one." When a person has wealth, that wealth is a cause for him to be respected, prominent, and distinguished among people, because he helps them with his wealth. So regarding the acquisition and earning of wealth, he says: "It is a distinction for the noble one" on one hand, and "it makes one independent of the base one" on the other. When a person is rich with what he has, that makes him independent of knocking on people's doors, especially since it is usually the case that people who possess wealth and are able to help others are base, not noble. If they give, they boast about it; if they refuse, they curse and insult. Therefore, a person's acquisition of wealth and dealing with it, on one hand, raises his rank and status among people and makes him among the noble, meaning distinguished and noble. On the other hand, he is independent of asking some of the base people for money in this state. Especially since it has passed with us in some of our previous lessons the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one which expends, and the lower one is the one which asks. اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى ، واليد العليا هي المعطية واليد السفلى هي الآخذة
Muwatta Malik 58:8
It seems that here, when he said: "Hold on to wealth and its acquisition, for it is a distinction for the noble one and makes one independent of the base one," he derived this meaning from this noble hadith
The upper hand اليد العليا
which is the giving hand
better than a taking one خير من اليد السفلى
Sahih al-Bukhari 5355
