Explanation of his saying: "And hold fast to wealth and its acquisition; for it is the mark of the noble, and it frees one from the base."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Among the advice of this wise man to his children was his saying to them: "And hold fast to wealth and its acquisition." By wealth here, he means everything of value, not just the two currencies. He is admonishing his children not to be a burden on people. He admonishes and advises them to have wealth earned from which they can sustain themselves and not need others. Why? He said: "For it is the mark of the noble." When a person has wealth, that wealth becomes a cause for him to be respected, prominent, and distinguished among people, because he helps them with his wealth. Thus, acquiring wealth and earning it is a mark of nobility on one hand, and it frees one from the base on the other. When a person is rich with what he has, that richness spares him from knocking on people's doors. Especially since, as is usually the case, people who possess wealth and are able to help others are often base rather than noble. If they give, they boast about it; if they refuse, they insult and curse. Therefore, a person's acquisition of wealth and dealing with it, on one hand, raises his status and rank among people and makes him a noble, distinguished figure among them. On the other hand, it frees him, in this state, from having to ask some of the base people for money. Especially since we have passed with us in some of our previous lessons the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one which expends, and the lower one is the one which asks. اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى ، واليد العليا هي المعطية ، واليد السفلى هي الآخذة
Muwatta Malik 58:8
; so it seems that here, when he said: "Hold fast to wealth and its acquisition; for it is the mark of the noble, and it frees one from the base," he derived this meaning from this noble hadith:
The upper hand, which is the one that gives, is better than the lower hand. اليد العليا - وهي المعطية - خير من اليد السفلى
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 23:83
