The Shaykh Al-Albani’s debate with the Qadiani regarding his denial of the hadith (Ibrahim did not lie except for three lies) and the clarification of the permissibility of lying for the sake of public benefit.

The Shaykh : And as I said earlier, everyone knows that truthfulness leads to benefits for society, and the opposite is the case with lying. Therefore, it is a mental and logical rigidity for some people to cling to the words and forbid lying, even if it leads to the salvation of a believing soul. As happened between me and one of the Qadianis here in the past, because they deny some authentic hadiths simply because they contradict certain literal matters. Among these hadiths is what al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated in their "Sahihayn" that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abraham did not tell lies except three.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5084
And these lies are mentioned in the Noble Qur'an. When the sun rose, he said,
He said, "This is my Lord, this is greater"
. He meant that it was truly his Lord, but he only wanted to make his polytheistic people hear it. Similarly, when it was said to him, "Who did this to our gods, O Ibrahim?" he said,
He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."
[Al-Anbya 21:63]
. He broke the idols and left the largest idol intact. When his people came, they found the scene in their temple: all the idols were broken except the large one. They said to him, "Who did this to our great idol?" This was a lie, but it was an exposed lie intended to draw the attention of these ignorant idolaters to the fact that how can you worship one who cannot benefit or harm himself? In this same incident, and before it, they invited him to go with them to a festival of theirs, so he made an excuse by saying,
Indeed, I am sick
, meaning he was sick, but he was not sick. So these are the three lies that followed Ibrahim. I wish that all people would lie such lies.
The point is that that Qadiani denied this hadith and kept clinging to the phrase
Ibrahim lied three lies
. And Allah described Ibrahim in the Noble Qur'an as a friend and a prophet. So they keep making a big deal out of the literal aspect. Allah described Ibrahim as a friend and a prophet. A hadith says:
Whoever lies three lies
. This hadith is not authentic, even if all the imams of hadith narrated it. So I approached him from the logical side and said to him: Is truthfulness obligatory because it is composed of three letters, sad, dal, qaf? And is lying forbidden because it is composed of three other letters, kaf, dal, ba? Or is truthfulness obligatory because of the benefits that follow it, and lying forbidden because of the harms that follow it? He said, "Of course." He did not know what was behind that cover or premise. So I said to him: If in some cases, what results from sad, dal, qaf is what usually results from kaf, dal, ba, or what results from kaf, dal, ba is what usually results from sad, dal, qaf, then sad, dal, qaf remains obligatory if it results in what results from kaf, dal, ba, and sad, dal, ba remains forbidden even if it results in what usually results from sad, dal, qaf. He said, "I did not understand." We were at that time recently involved in the Syrian revolution here against the French. It was the custom of the Muslim revolutionaries to ambush some French soldiers with hand grenades and quickly flee, running between the alleys and lanes. And quickly the French gendarmerie would set out to search for them. So I said to this Qadiani: Suppose you were standing at the door of your house, and a man from these revolutionaries came to you, saying, "The French gendarmerie is chasing me, so shelter me with you." So you sheltered him. And a little while later, the French gendarmerie came and asked you, "Do you have any revolutionaries with you?" What would you say to them? He said, "I would say to them, 'Yes.'" I said, "Why?" He said, "Because lying is not permissible, my brother. Here, truthfulness means killing the Muslim." So this hadith came to open the mind of the Muslim and not to stand at the words, but to follow the objectives of the Shari'ah. What is the objective of truthfulness? Reform, not corruption. What is the objective of lying? The opposite of reform, which is corruption. So here, a man or a woman comes to another person who is in a dispute with him, and says, "So-and-so and so-and-so have such and such," and all of that has no basis, but only to soften the heart of the person he is speaking with so that he becomes lenient, and he exploits that in the path of reconciliation between the two. Is this lying permissible or forbidden? The answer in this hadith is that it is permissible, because its objective is not corruption but reform. Therefore, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Someone who makes peace between people by saying something good or relates something good is not a liar.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 385
. This was said by Umm Kulthum, the daughter of 'Uqbah.
Umm Kulthum, the daughter of 'Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt, reported that she heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, "Someone who makes peace between people by saying something good or relates something good is not a liar."
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 385
. And this is the continuation of the discussion on this, if Allah wills, in the next lesson, by the permission of Allah, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
