The Shaykh’s dialogue with a Qadiani on the permissibility of lying for the sake of reconciliation and the authenticity of the hadith regarding the lies of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As a meeting took place between me and one of the Qadianis here some time ago, because they deny some of the authentic hadiths merely because they contradict certain verbal aspects of these hadiths. What al-Bukhari and Muslim included in their "Sahih" collections is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abraham did not tell lies except three.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5084
When the sun rose, he said:
He said, "This is my Lord, this is greater"
, meaning it was not actually his Lord, but he wanted to make his polytheistic people hear it. Likewise, when it was said to him:
(62) They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?" (63) He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."
[Al-Anbya 21:62-63]
, he broke the idols and left the largest idol intact. When his people came, they found that the day of judgment had risen regarding their object of worship; all their idols were broken except the large idol. They asked him, "Who did this?" He said, "This large one did it." This is a lie, but it is an exposed lie intended to draw the attention of these ignorant idolaters to the fact that how do you worship one who has no power to harm or benefit himself? In this incident and before it, they invited him to go with them to a festival of theirs, so he made an excuse by saying:
Indeed, I am sick
, meaning he was sick, but he was not sick. These lies followed Ibrahim so that people would all lie such lies. The point is that that Qadiani denied this hadith, and the word spread: "Ibrahim lied three lies." And Allah described Ibrahim in the Noble Qur'an as:
he was a man of truth and a prophet.
[Maryam 19:41]
, so they twist and turn from a verbal perspective. Allah described Ibrahim as:
he was a man of truth and a prophet.
[Maryam 19:41]
, and the hadith that he
he lied three lies
is a hadith that the scholars, the imams of hadith, all authenticated. So I approached him from the logical side and said to him: Is truth obligatory because it is composed of three letters, s, d, q, and lying is forbidden because it is composed of three other letters, k, dh, b? Or is truth obligatory because of the benefits that follow it, and lying is forbidden because of the harms that follow it? He said: It is so. Of course, he did not know what was behind the introduction. So I said to him: If in some cases the result of s, d, q is what usually results from k, dh, b, or the result of k, dh, b is what usually results from s, d, q, then does s, d, q become obligatory if it results in what results from k, dh, b, while k, dh, b remains forbidden even if it results in what usually results from s, d, q? He said: I did not understand. We were at that time recently involved in the Syrian revolution against the French, and it was the custom of the Muslim revolutionaries to ambush some French soldiers with hand grenades and quickly flee, running between the alleys and entrances. Soon the French gendarmerie would set out to search for them. So I said to this Qadiani: If you were standing at the door of your house and a man from these revolutionaries came to you saying, "The French gendarmerie is chasing me, so shelter me with you," and you sheltered him, and soon the French gendarmerie came and asked you, "Is any of the revolutionaries here?" What do you say to him? He said: I would say yes. Why? Because lying is not permissible. My brother, this truth, if you tell the truth, means you killed a Muslim. So this hadith came to open the mind of the Muslim so that he does not stand at the words only, but follows the objectives of the Shari'ah. What is the purpose of truth? Reconciliation, not corruption. What is the purpose of lying? The opposite of reconciliation, which is corruption. So here, a man or woman comes to another person who is in a dispute with him and says to him, "So-and-so says this and that about you," and all of that has no basis, but only to soften the heart of the person he is speaking with so that he leans toward reconciliation and he exploits that in the path of reconciliation between the two. Is this lying permissible or forbidden? The answer in this hadith is that it is permissible. Why? Because the purpose is not corruption but reconciliation. Therefore, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Someone who makes peace between people by saying something good or relates something good is not a liar.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 385
,
Umm Kulthum, the daughter of 'Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt, reported that she heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, "Someone who makes peace between people by saying something good or relates something good is not a liar."
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 385
. And the continuation of the discussion on this will be in the next lesson, if Allah wills, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
