Question: Which is better for the traveler, breaking the fast or fasting? And what is the ruling if the traveler intends to stay in a place for less than four days? Is he permitted to break his fast in this case or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: A traveler who is traveling a journey in which shortening the prayer is permitted, which is called the journey of shortening, by reaching eighty kilometers or more, it is better for him to break his fast in accordance with the legal dispensation. And if he fasts while he is a traveler, his fast is valid and sufficient.because of His saying, the Exalted: [Surat al-Baqarah: 185] .
So breaking the fast while traveling is better than fasting, and if he fasts, there is no blame on him, if Allah wills, and his fasting is sufficient and valid.
As for if he intends to stay for less than four days, he has the rulings of a traveler. It is permissible for him to break his fast and it is permissible for him to shorten the prayer, because if his stay is less than four days, it does not remove him from the ruling of a traveler.
As for if his intended stay exceeds four days, he takes the ruling of a resident. So the rulings of travel are cut off for him, and it is obligatory for him to fast and to complete the prayer, because the rulings of travel are cut off by this stay that exceeds four days, and he has resolved upon it and intended it.
