Explaining the preferred option for a traveler: fasting or breaking the fast during the day in Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q522: The questioner asks: If one travels during the day in Ramadan, is it better for him to fast or to break his fast?
A522: For a traveler whose journey permits shortening the prayer, or what is called the journey of shortening, a distance of eighty kilometers or more, it is better for him to break his fast in accordance with the legal dispensation. If he fasts while traveling, his fast is valid and sufficient, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
. Therefore, breaking the fast while traveling is better than fasting. If he fasts, there is no blame on him in that, if Allah wills, and his fast is sufficient and valid. As for if he intends to stay for less than four days, he has the ruling of a traveler; it is permissible for him to break his fast and permissible for him to shorten the prayer, because if his stay is less than four days, it does not remove him from the ruling of a traveler. However, if the stay he intends exceeds four days, he takes on the ruling of a resident; it is obligatory for him to fast and to complete the prayer, because the rulings of prayer are severed from him by a stay exceeding four days, which he has resolved upon and intended.
