Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says in the eighty-eighth chapter after the hundredth: "Chapter on Boycotting a Man"
He narrated it with his authentic chain of narration.
From 'Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thu'ayl, who is the maternal cousin of 'A'ishah, that 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr said:
In a sale or a gift that 'A'ishah gave him, and by Allah, 'A'ishah, you will stop, or I will boycott you. So she said: Did he say this? They said: Yes. 'A'ishah said: It is a vow upon me for the sake of Allah that I will never speak to the son of al-Zubayr again. So the son of al-Zubayr sought intercession with the Muhajireen when his boycott of her prolonged. And she said: By Allah, I will not intercede for anyone in this matter, and I will not break my vow. When it prolonged for the son of al-Zubayr, he spoke to al-Mas'ud ibn Makhramah and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn 'Abd Yaghuth, and they were from Banu Zahrah. He said to them: I implore you by Allah, that you bring me to 'A'ishah, for it is not permissible for her to vow to cut off ties with me. So al-Mas'ud and 'Abd al-Rahman came to her, wrapped in their cloaks, until they asked permission to enter upon 'A'ishah. They said: Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. May we enter? 'A'ishah said: Enter. They said: All of us, O Mother of the Believers. She said: Yes, enter, all of you. And she did not know that the son of al-Zubayr was with them. When they entered, the son of al-Zubayr entered the curtain and embraced 'A'ishah, and he began to implore her, weeping. And al-Mas'ud and 'Abd al-Rahman began to implore her to speak to him, and she accepted from him. And they said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade what you know of boycotting, for it is not permissible for a Muslim to boycott his brother for more than three nights. So when they pressed 'A'ishah with the reminder and the pressure, she began to remember them and weep, and she said: I have vowed, and a vow is severe. So they did not cease with her until she spoke to the son of al-Zubayr, and she freed forty slaves in her vow. And she used to mention her vow after that and weep until her tears would wet her head covering.

This hadith contains a lesson and clarification of what the Salaf of this Ummah were upon in fulfilling the obligation of the Shari'ah, to the extent that a man would boycott his brother and his relative, all of that for the sake of Allah the Mighty and Majestic. The author cited this hadith under the chapter "Boycotting a Man", meaning neglecting him, cutting off ties with him, and not speaking to him. It is as if he is asking: Is it permissible to boycott a man and cut off ties with him in Islam? So he brings this story, in which it is explicitly stated that the Lady 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) cut off ties with 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, and she was his maternal aunt, because 'A'ishah's sister was Asma', and 'Abd Allah was the son of Asma', who was married to al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam. So 'Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thu'ayl, who is the maternal cousin of 'A'ishah, al-Thu'ayl to whom the narrator of this hadith, 'Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thu'ayl, belongs, and this al-Thu'ayl is the maternal cousin of 'A'ishah. 'A'ishah's mother was Umm Ruman, and she was married to a man who died in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance named al-Harith or 'Abd Allah; they differed regarding his name. He was an ally of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) according to their custom of alliance and factionalism at that time. So this man died, and Umm Ruman was his wife, so Abu Bakr al-Siddiq married her after the death of her first husband. So Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was blessed with the Lady 'A'ishah from Umm Ruman. So this story is narrated by 'Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thu'ayl, who is the maternal cousin of 'A'ishah, Umm Ruman, that 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, meaning it reached her, that 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr said in a sale or a gift that 'A'ishah gave him: "By Allah, 'A'ishah, you will stop, or I will boycott you".
