The Shaykh: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says in the eighty-eighth chapter after the hundredth, "The Chapter on Boycotting a Man." He narrated with his authentic chain of narration from Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thuflayl (who is the maternal cousin of A'ishah) that A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was informed that 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr said regarding a sale or a gift that A'ishah had given him: "By Allah, A'ishah will either stop, or I will boycott her." She said: "Did he say that?" They said: "Yes." A'ishah said: "Then it is a vow for the sake of Allah that I will never speak a word to Ibn al-Zubayr again." When her boycott of him became prolonged, Ibn al-Zubayr sought intercession through the Muhajireen. She said: "By Allah, I will not allow anyone to intercede for him, ever, and I will not break my vow." When this became prolonged for Ibn al-Zubayr, he spoke to al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn Yaghuth, who were from the Banu Zuhrah tribe. He said to them: "I invoke Allah upon you both to enter upon A'ishah; for it is not permissible for her to vow to cut off ties with me." So al-Miswar and 'Abd al-Rahman came to her, wrapping him in their cloaks, until they asked permission to enter upon A'ishah. They said: "Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. May we enter?" A'ishah said: "Enter." They said: "All of us, O Mother of the Believers?" She said: "Yes, enter, all of you." And A'ishah did not know that Ibn al-Zubayr was with them. When they entered, Ibn al-Zubayr entered the veil, embraced A'ishah, and began to plead with her while weeping. Al-Miswar and 'Abd al-Rahman began to plead with her to speak to him and accept from him, saying: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade what you know of boycotting; for it is not permissible for a Muslim to boycott his brother for more than three nights." It was said: When they increased their reminding and pressing her, she began to remind them and weep, saying: "I have vowed, and a vow is serious." They did not cease with her until she spoke to Ibn al-Zubayr. Then she freed forty slaves in fulfillment of her vow. And she used to mention her vow after that and weep until her tears would soak her head covering.
This hadith contains a lesson and clarification of what the Salaf of this Ummah were upon in fulfilling the obligation of the Shari'ah, to the extent that a man would boycott his brother and his relative, all of that for the sake of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The author cited this hadith under the chapter "Boycotting a Man," meaning neglecting him, cutting off ties with him, and not speaking to him. It is as if he is asking: Is it permissible to boycott a man and cut off ties with him in Islam? So he brings this story, in which there is an explicit statement that the Lady A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) cut off ties with 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, and she was his maternal aunt, because A'ishah's sister was Asma', and 'Abd Allah was the son of Asma', who was married to al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam. So Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thuflayl, who is the maternal cousin of A'ishah through her mother al-Thuflayl, to whom the narrator of this hadith belongs, and who is Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thuflayl ibn al-Thuflayl, this al-Thuflayl is the maternal cousin of A'ishah through her mother Umm Ruman. Umm Ruman was married to a man who died in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, named al-Harith or 'Abd Allah, and they differed regarding his name. He was an ally of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) according to their custom of alliance and factionalism at that time. This man died, and Umm Ruman was his wife, so Abu Bakr al-Siddiq married her after the death of her first husband. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was blessed with the Lady A'ishah from Umm Ruman. So this story is narrated by Awf ibn al-Harith ibn al-Thuflayl, who is the maternal cousin of A'ishah through her mother Umm Ruman, that A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was informed, meaning it reached her, that 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr said regarding a sale or a gift that A'ishah had given him: "By Allah, A'ishah will either stop, or I will boycott her."
