The ruling on what is called Islamic video, which involves filming the lectures of some scholars and shaykhs

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : As for us here, a matter has spread, which is what is called "Islamic video". The brothers in the recordings for selling tapes of these lectures and sermons, and so on, also have a corner they call the Islamic video corner, where they display pictures of some shaykhs and lectures by some shaykhs. They say that it is for the benefit of the da'wah and falls under the category of da'wah to film, for example, and may Allah protect us, Shaykh Al-Albani.

The Shaykh : May Allah forbid it.

The questioner : May Allah forbid it. They say: if the Shaykh appears in the picture, his impact is stronger than his voice. We would like to respond to this specific point, and may Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : To summarize the question: In Jeddah, a representative from the Al-Madinah newspaper came to me. He said he had received questions from some students of knowledge and wanted to get my answers to them. I told him there was no objection, and we agreed on a specific day. Then the time came, and he mentioned something similar to your words, but in a broader way, indicating that he wanted to take a picture to publish above the article he would broadcast or print about me. I listened to him for a long time. Of course, he embellished and decorated his request by saying that it would be more beneficial and have a stronger impact when people see the Shaykh's picture, and so on, with all this philosophy. I told him: May Allah bless you, we do not hold this opinion, because we could adopt and follow this opinion only if there were no texts forbidding photography and keeping pictures. But the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
May Allah curse the image-makers. لعن الله المصورين
And I entered into a lengthy discussion, and some contemporary scholars distinguish between hand-drawn pictures, which are forbidden, and photographic pictures, which are permissible, and so on. I said: this is a superficial, modern view and a rigid adherence to the difference in the process, even though the result is the same fruit. Accordingly, I rejected what was requested of me, and part of the article was published in the first installment, and perhaps the rest was published in my absence. The point is that we do not see photography as permissible except for necessity or what is required by need, provided there is no harm in it. This is the summary of what has preceded.
