The questioner : May Allah reward you with good, O honorable father (may Allah preserve you). You have graded a hadith as good in al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, which is the hadith of Jabir: Do we believe that Allah spoke to him while he was in the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection)? And may Allah reward you with good?
The Shaykh : There is no doubt that this hadith clearly indicates that He spoke. We cannot do what the people of ta'til (denial of the divine attributes) do, who interpret the texts in a way that takes them away from their apparent meaning, so that we say He will speak to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was the most eloquent of those who spoke the Arabic language, said that He spoke to the father of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with both of them, may Allah be pleased with the father and the son). He spoke to him, and he did not say He will speak to him. So we believe in the unseen, as the Lord of the Worlds said:[Al-Baqarah 2:2-3] And we do not ask how or why, for that indicates weakness in faith.
