What is the difference between the narrator saying: "He told us" or "He informed us" or "He narrated to us"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: His EminenceThe Shaykh- May Allah reward you with good, may Allah reward you, and may Allah benefit everyone with your knowledge - What is the difference between the narrator saying: "He told us" or "He informed us" or "He narrated to us"?

The Shaykh: There are technical terms associated with these three words. When the narrator or the muhaddith says: "So-and-so told us," he means orally. Sometimes, the phrase "He informed us" takes its place; however, "He informed us" may be intended to mean that the narration was not oral, but rather by whatever means the muhaddith received it, such as being written to him in a book. The third phrase, "He narrated to us," is more precise in their terminology than "He informed us," because it was established specifically for written narration. So, if the muhaddith says: "He narrated to us," it is generally an announcement by the muhaddith that his shaykh narrated to him in writing. But if he says: "He told us," it means he heard it with his own ears from the mouth ofThe Shaykh : and not that it was written to him.
