The questioner : The brothers say: The issue concerns cards bearing the names of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He), like the image attached to this message, and they have included in this message an image of the Ka'bah covering with verses from the clear Book of Allah. They say that these are thrown on the ground by people who do not know Islam, and they say this is merely a reference. What do you advise the sellers to do regarding this, or those who care about this matter?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah. This issue has become widespread among people in various forms. Some are cards bearing "Allah" and others bearing "Muhammad" next to them, and then the two cards are placed side by side on a wall or a board or something similar. We are speaking about this form. First, what is the benefit of hanging the word "Allah" alone, or "Muhammad" alone? If a person thinks he will benefit from this by seeking blessing, then the blessing is not obtained through such an act, for this is not a meaningful phrase that conveys a meaning that can be interpreted as seeking blessing. Moreover, seeking blessing in this manner is not permissible, for seeking blessing through Allah and His names cannot be utilized except in the manner that has been transmitted, because it is an act of worship, and worship is based on restriction to what is prescribed. Then, this arrangement we mentioned previously, where the word "Allah" is placed and next to it, parallel to it, the word "Muhammad", this is a type of associating partners with Allah and equating Allah with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is not permissible.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : A man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "What Allah wills and what you will." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Have you made me a rival to Allah? Rather, it is what Allah alone wills. أجعلتني لله ندا بل ما شاء الله وحده
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 18:1391
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Furthermore, seeking blessing merely by placing the name of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is also not permissible. Seeking blessing is only achieved by adhering to the Shari'ah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and acting upon it. This is an example of what people use in these cards, and it has become clear that it contains a violation of the Shari'ah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for the second image mentioned by the brother questioner, its permissibility is also a matter of concern. Its permissibility is a matter of concern because the original ruling regarding writing the Qur'an on papers and boards is that it is permissible. However, hanging it on the walls of homes has not been transmitted from the righteous Salaf (may Allah have mercy on them), neither from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor from his Companions, nor from the Tabi'un. I do not know exactly when this religious innovation occurred. In reality, it is a religious innovation, for the Qur'an was revealed to be recited.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Not to be hung on walls and other places. Moreover, hanging it on walls has a harm in addition to the fact that it was not transmitted from the Salaf. That harm is that a person relies on this hanging and believes it is a protection for him, so he becomes self-sufficient with it instead of the true protection, which is recitation with the tongue. For recitation is the beneficial protection, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the Verse of the Throne:
Whoever recites it in a night, a protector from Allah will remain over him, and no Shaytan will approach him until he becomes morning من قرأها في ليلة لم يزل عليه من الله حافظ ولا يقربه شيطان حتى يُصبح
. If a person feels that hanging these verses on walls protects him, he will feel self-sufficient with them instead of reciting the Qur'an. Furthermore, there is a type of taking the verses of Allah in mockery, for gatherings are generally not free from forbidden words, such as backbiting, cursing, and insulting, or forbidden actions. Perhaps there is something in these gatherings of the instruments of amusement that the Shari'ah has forbidden. So these things exist while the Qur'an is hung above people's heads, as if they are actually mocking it, because this Qur'an forbids these things, whether the written verse is the one that forbids these things or any other verse from the Qur'an. This is undoubtedly a type of mocking the verses of Allah. Therefore, we advise our Muslim brothers to refrain from using such hangings, whether it is a name of Allah, the name of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or verses from the Qur'an. Let them use what their righteous predecessors used, for therein is good and blessing. As for the question of the brother.

The questioner : Before we come to the question of the brother.
