What is the ruling on the Duha prayer? If a person prays it once and then leaves it off, or leaves it off for a period, is he required to be consistent with it or not? And is it permissible for him to repent and return to it? He says: We ask for an answer to this question, and we are grateful.

The questioner : What is the ruling on the Duha prayer? If a person prays it once and then leaves it off, or leaves it off for a period, is he required to be consistent with it or not? And is it permissible for him to repent and return to it? He says: We ask for an answer to this question, and we are grateful?

The Shaykh : The Sunnah of Duha, or the Duha prayer, is a matter on which scholars have differed regarding its status as a Sunnah. Some hold that it is not a Sunnah, some hold that it is a Sunnah absolutely in both cases, and some hold that it is a Sunnah for one who does not perform Tahajjud at night, but not a Sunnah for one who does perform Tahajjud at night. The stronger view in my opinion is that it is an absolute Sunnah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : For when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that upon every person, every morning, upon every limb of his, is a charity, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
and two rak'ahs which one prays in the forenoon will suffice. ويجزئ من ذلك ركعتان يركعهما من الضحى
Sahih Muslim 720
This indicates that it is recommended for a person to pray two rak'ahs in the Duha of every day.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So that he may be reassured about performing the charity due upon him, upon every limb of his, and so that the tasbih, tahlil, recitation of the Qur'an, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and other good deeds he does may be an addition to his good deeds.

The questioner : Yes, but he also asks about continuity: is it permissible for him to discontinue it?

The Shaykh : As for the permissibility of discontinuing it, yes, it is permissible for a person to discontinue it, just as it is permissible for him to discontinue other voluntary acts of worship.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : However, it is recommended for a man, when he does a deed, to establish it and persist in it.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : For this was the habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): that when he did a deed, he would establish it. And he said to one of his Companions:
Don’t be like so and so, ‘Abdallah. He used to get up during the night, then abandoned the practice. لا تكن مثل فلان كان يصلي من الليل فترك قيام الليل
Mishkat al-Masabih 1234

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes?

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
This is a message that came from al-Khamsayin in Wadi al-Dawasir, from the questioner Muhammad Ibrahim Sultan.
