What is the ruling on vows? Is it forbidden or permissible?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling on vows? Is it forbidden or permissible?

The Shaykh : The vow that I consider to be forbidden and not permissible is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it, and the original ruling of prohibition is that it is forbidden. Also, it obligates a person to do what Allah has not obligated him to do. Furthermore, it is prone to not being fulfilled, as is often the case with those who make vows; they do not fulfill what they vowed, and this is dangerous for them.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Especially since some people, when they are in severe distress and their situation becomes difficult, make a large vow, and then it becomes difficult for them to fulfill it afterwards.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And this is very dangerous.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So what I consider to be the stronger opinion and what I lean towards is that the vow is forbidden, not merely disliked.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it, and the original ruling of prohibition is that it is forbidden, and because of the hardship involved in obliging a man to do what is not obligatory upon him while he is in a state of well-being.

The questioner : His second question says in it.
