The Shaykh’s remarks on the hadith: “Whoever breaks his fast for one day in Ramadan and does not make it up, he will fast for the rest of his life, even if he does fast it.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And in the heads of the gatherings, they claim that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever breaks the fast for one day in Ramadan and does not make it up, he will fast for the rest of his life, even if he does fast it. من أفطر يوما من رمضان لم يقضه صوم الدهر و إن صامه
This is a hadith; perhaps I may say that, and praise be to Allah, it is not authentic. I may say that it is not authentic because I know that, but I do not know [the exact status]. I may say, praise be to Allah, that it is not authentic because it exaggerates the punishment for the one who breaks his fast in Ramadan and overstates it by saying that if he fasted the entire year, he would not be able to compensate for what he missed from fasting that day which he broke. I say this in addition to something important mentioned on this occasion, even though it is related to prayer, which is a pillar of the five pillars, a pillar of the five pillars of Islam, as you know. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The first thing the servant will be held accountable for on the Day of Resurrection is prayer. If it is complete, he will have succeeded and prospered. If it is deficient, Allah the Mighty and Majestic will say to His angels—and here is the point—if it is deficient, Allah the Mighty and Majestic will say to His angels: Look, does My servant have any voluntary prayers? Then complete his obligatory prayers with them.
This means that if a Muslim realizes that he has neglected a prayer, the way out of that has been clarified by this authentic hadith, which is that he should increase in voluntary prayers, increase in the nafilah, so that he compensates from the rewards available to his account on the Day of Allah, the Day of meeting Allah, compensating from these rewards available due to his voluntary prayers for what he missed of the reward of the prayer he lost. On this scale, we can say, quoting from this authentic hadith, that whoever breaks his fast for one day in Ramadan, he should increase in voluntary acts so that he compensates for what he missed of the reward of breaking his fast for that day. From here, we say: that this hadith mentioned above is weak in chain and text.
Whoever breaks the fast for one day in Ramadan without an excuse and does not make it up, he will fast for the rest of his life, even if he does fast it. من أفطر يوما من رمضان بغير عذر لم يقضه صوم الدهر و إن صامه
This is an exaggeration, and praise be to Allah that the hadith is weak and not authentic. Yes.
