The questioner : What is the creed of Imam al-Shawkani? And what distinguishes his jurisprudence in his books, such as "Nayl al-Awtar" and "al-Sayl al-Jarrar," and other books?

The Shaykh : There is no doubt that Imam al-Shawkani is a scholar qualified to derive rulings, and he has a firm foundation in Islamic jurisprudence. He is a scholar qualified to derive rulings even in matters of creed, not just in legal rulings. His creed is predominantly that of the Salaf, but the truth of what Imam Malik said is: "No one has been granted knowledge except that he was refuted and refuted others; except the one in this grave" — and he pointed to the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, he has some views that contradict what the Salaf were upon, and these are excused from him in light of the fact that the majority of his creed conforms to the creed of the righteous Salaf.
What comes to mind now among his anomalies is that he permits seeking nearness to Allah through a means by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), of course after his death (peace be upon him). He cites as evidence for this the hadith of the blind man, which is well-known and famous among students of knowledge in this age. It does not indicate anything except seeking nearness to Allah through a means by the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his intercession. Therefore, his knowledge should be studied from all his books, and much can be derived from them regarding issues that some scholars, let alone students of knowledge, overlook. However, this should be looked at in conjunction with evidence, so that one does not fall into any of the errors that he, we, and others who study knowledge may fall into; for infallibility belongs to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and to no one else.
