The questioner : All right, Shaykh, there is a hadith in which the Messenger of Allah—may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him—says:
Indeed, these graves are darkness for their inhabitants, and Allah illuminates them with my prayer for them إنَّ هذه القبور ظلمة على أهلها والله ينوِّرها بصلاتي عليهم
. I do not know how to explain this hadith?

Another questioner : Its meaning?

The questioner : The meaning of the hadith.

The Shaykh : The meaning of the hadith is that the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the dead alleviates from them what they may deserve of the punishment of the grave, or increases their light upon light.

The questioner : Upon their light.

The Shaykh : In their graves, yes.
