Women cutting their hair, and the prohibition of imitating men or open sinners.

The questioner : The ruling on cutting hair is related to this...

The Shaykh : What has been reported, and indeed in Sahih Muslim, is that the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to cut some of their hair until it was like a tuft. However, it should be noted that a woman’s intention must not be to imitate men or the open sinners among women. Similarly, regarding young men who grow their hair long... they must not intentionally do so to follow the fashion of the present age, but rather do it as a dispensation, based on his saying (peace be upon him):
Leave it all or shave it all. اتركوه كلَّه أو احلقوه كلَّه
. If the factor of imitation enters in, the ruling changes; it shifts from permissibility to being disliked or forbidden.
