A Benefit from a Report

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Naturally, we do not burden every individual Muslim with being a scholar, nor even a student of knowledge. No, but we advise that one should be at least one of three: a scholar, a student, or a listener. Do not be the fourth, lest you perish, as mentioned in some reports from Mu'adh ibn Jabal and others. As we all know, most of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were not scholars; most of them were from the general public. However, they would seek legal rulings and would not undertake any action until they asked the people of knowledge, acting upon His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He):
So ask the people of the message if you do not know. فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
[An-Nahl 16:43]
