You mentioned that the silence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not always an approval; I hope you will clarify that?

The questioner: His EminenceThe Shaykh- May Allah preserve you - , you mentioned that the silence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not always an approval; I hope you will clarify that, and may Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : It is as ifThe questioner : He says: You mentioned this in some gatherings and in some sermons, and otherwise I said earlier in the beginning of this session that the Sunnah is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), his doing, and his approval. I said it this way, and I ranked his approval (peace be upon him) of something at the level of his doing it, or the level of his saying it, either as permission, or as encouragement, or as a command. As for this question, I have indeed mentioned in some gatherings that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in some cases does not have his silence as an approval, and this is explicit in some hadiths; among them:
The hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), which al-Hakim and others narrated with a sound chain, and Abu Ya'la in his Musnad, that a man used to come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asking for money, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would give it to him, and he was strong. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in some hadiths:
Charity is not lawful for the rich nor for the physically fit. لا صدقةَ لغنيٍّ ولا لذي مرَّة سويٍّ
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 652Hasan (Darussalam)
, meaning: no ... with charity, especially if it is ... for the rich person who is the one who is obligated to give charity,
nor for the physically fit ولا لذي مرَّةٍ سويٍّ
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 652Hasan (Darussalam)
; meaning: one who has strength and a sound build and is not disabled. But what used to happen sometimes and what his Companions witnessed from him was that a man who was strong and sound would come to him, ask him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would give him whatever was available to him of charity. When he leftThe questioner : ... what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him, he would say to those around him: He left my presence clutching it like fire. It would be said to him: So why do you give it to him, O Messenger of Allah? And the answer would be:
They ask me, and Allah dislikes for me stinginess يسألونني ، ويكره الله لِيَ البخل
; meaning: I give it to him so that he does not return to his tribe or his people and talk about me if I did not give it to him, saying that Muhammad is a stingy man. And Allah dislikes for him (peace and blessings be upon him) that people talk about him, even with stinginess, and say about him: He is stingy. So he gives, and his giving to this one who does not deserve the giving, and his silence regarding it, does not mean approval of his action. Rather, that is an exception to the rule that silence is approval; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) explained in this hadith why he gives him and lets him go when he leaves. He says to his Companions, by way of explanation, that he only gives under compulsion, and the compulsion here is legal, not physical; because he is able to prevent him and turn him away, and to say: You are strong and of complete body and build. But he fears that behind that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) will be attributed to stinginess, and that is something that drives people away from him. And from a hadith like this, some of the scholars who speak on tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and 'aqidah (creed) derived that the original state of the prophets is that they are perfect in their appearances, and that they are not in their forms repulsive to people; because that is not consistent with their calling people to the call of truth, the call of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), and the call of the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) that Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) revealed to them all.
