What is your opinion of those who permit holding Mawlid celebrations and celebrations for the Night of the Ascension, as they claim?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you and reward you with good. He says:The questioner : What is your opinion of those who permit holding Mawlid celebrations and celebrations for the Night of the Ascension, as they claim? And take this as a measure and compare it to other celebrations for which we know no basis in the Sunnah. And if they do have a basis, we ask to be informed of the evidence. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : If you recall my words and my lecture in this gathering, and that two conditions are required for an act of worship: the first is that it conforms to the Sunnah, and the second is that it is sincere for the sake of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And these celebrations, some of which I referred to in the question,The questioner : undoubtedly do not meet the first condition, and the second condition may not be met either.
The first condition is conformity with the Sunnah. This is not of the Sunnah in any way. Celebrating, in terms of... and the Night of the Ascension and the Miraj, and the middle night of Sha'ban, and similar celebrations; these are not of the Sunnah, not from near nor from far. So this condition is negated; that is, for this to be a righteous act conforming to the Sunnah, it does not conform to the Sunnah; rather, it contradicts the Sunnah.
And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me
Sahih Muslim 1401
.
As for the second condition, it is sincerity for Allah (Mighty and Majestic). It may not be present in many of these celebrations, because their purpose is showing off, boasting, and bragging. And if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performs some of the prescribed matters, if they are done for boasting, there is no reward for them; rather, there is a sin. Perhaps you have heard the words of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever builds for Allah a mosque, even as small as the nesting place of a sparrow, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 9:170
. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the mosques, which are the houses of Allah:
Whoever builds a mosque.
... However long it is, he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to great lengths in encouraging care for building mosques, on the condition that they be sincere for the sake of Allah, even if they were as small as the nesting place of a sparrow.
Allah has built a house in Paradise
Sahih Ibn Hibban 11:58
. So whoever builds a mosque for boasting and bragging, he has no house in Paradise; rather, a house may be built for him in the Fire, by way of punishment for his lack of sincerity in building the mosque for the sake of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And therefore he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
What are these voices?The questioner : Far away, far away.The Shaykh : .... The questioner : ... --
= The Shaykh : Therefore he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Last Hour will not come until people vie with one another about mosques.
Sunan Abi Dawud 449Sahih (Al-Albani)
. So what is the state of one who commits an innovation, thereby contradicting the Sunnah and having his deed returned to him? This is if he is sincere, as we presented to you at the beginning of this session. So what if it is combined with the intention of boasting, bragging, and showing off? And long ago, some of them said: "Love of showing off cuts off showing off."
And accordingly, I remind you of a prescribed celebration, if this expression is correct. And I only said "a prescribed celebration" to clarify to people how innovations divert them from the Sunnahs, as some of the Salaf said: "No innovation was brought forth except that it killed a Sunnah." Perhaps you all know that among the recommended fasts is the fasting of Monday. And many Muslims, even though they are the minority, still—praise be to Allah—maintain the fasting of Monday. But very few of these few know the wisdom in the legislation of fasting on Monday. This is what I want to draw your attention to. Imam Muslim narrated in his Sahih, from the hadith of Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about fasting on the Day of Ashura?" He said:
an expiation for one year كفَّارة سنة
. He said: "What do you say about fasting on the Day of 'Arafah?" He said:
an expiation for two years كفارة سنتين
. He said: "What do you say about fasting on Monday?" He said:
This is the day on which I was born and the day on which I was sent
Bulugh al-Maram 5:31
. And in a narration:
Revelation was sent down to me on that day
.
So in this hadith, there is a very subtle indication that the one who fasts on Monday should fast it as a celebration and joy for the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this day, and the descent of the rain and much good; which is the revelation upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this day. The people are truthful in most of what they have narrated from the Jews before:
Would you exchange what is better for what is less?
[Al-Baqarah 2:61]
. So they replaced the known celebration today, the celebration of the Mawlid, with fasting on Monday. The true and repeated celebration, every week and not once a year, is the fasting of Monday. And you have heard his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
That is the day I was born, and that is the day revelation was sent down to me
. This is if it is permissible for us to call something a celebration for the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); it is only that we fast on Monday with the meaning that this authentic hadith indicated to us.
And the discussion of the prohibitions and innovations in which people celebrate today, which have absolutely no basis in the Sunnah, are only customs and traditions, a vast sea... And it is sufficient for me to remind you finally that this innovation began with the celebration in this Muhammadan Ummah of the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after about four centuries. The Salaf did not know such a celebration except the fasting I mentioned on Monday. Then this innovated celebration ended up with what you hear today, imitating the disbelievers in origin and detail; it has become that every household celebrates the birth of the small child, the year of the birth of the girl, the year of the birth of the boy, and they set up candles and imitate the disbelievers. The origin of this celebration of the Prophet's Mawlid is from the Christians; because the Christians celebrate the birth of 'Isa (peace be upon him)...
...
You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure, you too will go there.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3456
. The celebration of the Prophet's Mawlid began with the whispering of Satan the Rejected, to exalt the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then such a celebration progressed until it became a celebration for many of those who are thought to be righteous, and... like the celebration of the birth of "Ahmad al-Badawi" in some Egyptian lands, until the matter reached—as I mentioned earlier—the celebration of heroes and workers; that is one of those Sunnahs, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. So beware, O Muslims, of following the ways of those before you; lest you perish as they perished.
Yes.
