A Permissible Celebration as an Alternative to the Mawlid and the Night of the Ascension and the Journey

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And with that, I remind you of a permissible celebration, if that expression is correct. I said "a permissible celebration" to make it clear to people how innovations divert them from the Sunnah, as some of the Salaf said: "No innovation is introduced except that a Sunnah is killed". Perhaps you all know that among the recommended fasts is the fasting of Monday, and many Muslims, though they are the minority, still, praise be to Allah, maintain the fasting of Monday. But very few of that few know the wisdom behind the legislation of fasting on Monday. This is what I want to draw your attention to:
Imam Muslim narrated in his Sahih from the hadith of Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him):
A man said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about fasting on the Day of Ashura? He said: It is an expiation for a year. He said: What do you say about fasting on the Day of Arafah? He said: It is an expiation for two years. He said: What do you say about fasting on Monday? He said: That is the day I was born and the day I was sent.
And in another narration:
The revelation was sent down to me on it.
:
So, in this hadith, there is a very subtle indication that the one who fasts on Monday should fast it as a celebration and joy for the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this day, and the descent of the rain of abundant good, which is the revelation upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this day. The people, in truth, have replaced, in most of them, what Allah said about the Jews before:
Would you exchange what is better for what is less?
[Al-Baqarah 2:61]
. They have replaced the well-known celebration today, the Mawlid celebration, with fasting on Monday. The true and recurring celebration, which happens every week and not just once a year, is the fasting of Monday. You have heard his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
That is the day I was born, and that is the day the revelation was sent down to me on it.
. If it is permissible for us to call anything a celebration of the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then it is only that we fast on Monday with the meaning that this authentic hadith indicated to us. And the investigation of the Mawlid celebrations and the innovations in which people celebrate today—and they have absolutely no basis in the Sunnah, they are merely customs and traditions—is an ocean with no shore.
It is sufficient for me to remind you finally that this innovation began with the celebration in this Muhammadan Ummah of the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after about four centuries, during which the Salaf did not know of such a celebration except for the fasting on Monday that I mentioned. Then this innovated celebration ended up as you may hear today, imitating the disbelievers in origin and detail, to the point where every household celebrates the birth of the small child, the birth year of the girl, the birth year of the boy, they light candles and imitate the disbelievers. The origin of this celebration of the Prophet's Mawlid is from the Christians, because the Christians celebrate the birth of Isa (peace be upon him).
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure, you too will go there.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3456
The celebration of the Prophet's Mawlid began with the whispering of Satan the accursed, in order to exalt the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then such a celebration progressed until it became the celebration of many whom people consider righteous and close friends of Allah, such as the celebration of the birth of Ahmad al-Badawi in some Egyptian lands, until it reached, as I mentioned earlier, the celebration of children and boys. That is the Sunnah, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. So beware, O Muslims, of following the ways of those before you, lest you perish as they perished.
