Fatwa number ( 3783 ):
Q: My brothers, the head and members of the Ifta Committee in our rural villages in Jordan, and specifically in my town ( Kharja ), continuously recite the biography of the birth of the Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the following manner: (a) A group of men, and sometimes some women among them, gather and recite the story of the noble birth. The story contains phrases such as: "Whoever is named Muhammad, a caller will call him on the Day of Resurrection, by order of Allah: 'Rise and enter Paradise as a favor to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).'" It also says: "Whoever sends blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) a thousand times, Allah will protect his body from the Fire." It also says: "When Abdullah , the father of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), married Amina , he died in Makkah , and a hundred women died because they did not marry Abdullah. It also says: When the reciter reaches the mention of the birth of his mother, the group stands up, and the Mawlid is recited as a sign of respect for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). There is more than this, and more eloquent, in a Mawlid called: Mawlid al-'Urawi . (b) They place a quantity of barley in the middle of the gathering and bring incense to burn. After the recitation, each person takes a little of the barley, considering that the Mawlid of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was recited over it, and this is considered a cure for any disease, for example. (c) In some Mawlid gatherings, women make loud cries of joy at the door of the room where the Mawlid is recited, in front of the men, out of joy for the recitation, and no one condemns it; rather, they agree with it. I, in turn, condemn it and do not
approve of it, as I have heard from your fatwa more than once on the radio, but they have not heard it from me.

A: First: Reciting the biography of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in its entirety to know what his rituals and worship were like in word and deed, and what his noble character was like, is prescribed and desirable. However, dedicating the story of the Mawlid to recitation and gathering for it, and making it a regular practice, and dedicating specific times for its recitation, all of this is a detestable religious innovation that was not present in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor in the first centuries, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) testified to as the best of generations. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
, and he said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
. And what you mentioned regarding the worldly and hereafter rewards in the Mawlid stories recited among you, and the death of a hundred women in Makkah when Abdullah married Amina because they did not marry him, is not historically established, nor from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Even if it were historically established, it would not serve as proof for the legitimacy of celebrating the Prophet's Mawlid. Second: Placing a quantity of barley or other items in the middle of the gathering, and using incense and burning it, and distributing what was mentioned in hope of its blessing, for the recitation of the Mawlid over it and seeking healing with it, and believing in its blessing, is a condemned religious innovation and corruption in creed. Third: Women expressing their joy with loud cries during the recitation of the Mawlid
and their mixing with the men are among the evils and trials that may lead to immorality, and I seek refuge in Allah from that. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
