The prevalence of rebuttals among scholars is a pathological phenomenon, and it leads to the fragmentation of thought and criticism among them. This is not a time for rebuttals.

The questioner : He saysThe questioner: From ... that the prevalence of rebuttals among scholars is a pathological phenomenon, and it leads to the fragmentation of thought and criticism among them. This is not a time for rebuttals, but rather a time for unity and standing against ... the Crusaders, Communism, Capitalism, Zionism, and Secularism. These rebuttals should be abandoned and attention turned to ...; so what is your comment on this, Your Eminence? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh: We hear this in many countries where there are some young people who are enthusiastic about Islam. If you asked them what Islam is, they would say like that non-Arab man who was cited as an example of his ignorance of his Islam when he met a man from the Jews, whom they call today "citizens." This designation is an innovation of the modern age. Their name in Islam is the dhimmis; that is, they were given the protection of Allah, meaning their wealth and honor are safe in exchange for their submission to the rule of Islam in the land where they live. The point is: this non-Arab man met a Jew from among the dhimmis, so he drew ... the dagger from its sheath and threatened to kill this man. He said to him: ... "Islamize or I will kill you." The Jew trembled and said: "Do not worry, what should I say?" He said: "I do not know!" [Everyone laughs].
This enthusiast for Islam, who was about to kill a dhimmi, says when the dhimmi submitted to the divine command to Islam ... what does he say? He did not know how to tell him: "Say: There is no god but Allah." Because the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah
Sahih Muslim 22
. And yet, this non-Arab, out of his ignorance, does not know that this dhimmi's blood is protected because he is from among the dhimmis; so it is not permissible to impose Islam upon him. For in his case, the Lord of Mankind said:
There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.
[Al-Baqarah 2:256]
.
This type of question stems from people who do not appreciate Islam in its true worth and do not care about practicing it. Who are these Muslims who say, as mentioned in the question, that they must unite to fight the disbelievers in all their forms and types? Are they those who understood Islam or those who were ignorant of it? There is no doubt that if ... he restrained himself from the tribalism and fanaticism of the pre-Islamic age, he would answer this question by saying: "They are those who knew Islam." We say: "You have known it, so adhere to it." Then the next question comes to you: Who are those who can stand against the disbelievers in all their types and differing beliefs? Are they these Muslims who understood Islam and applied it to themselves, their offspring, and their families, or those who neglected Islam and were content with shouting and clamor, saying: "Leave your differences among yourselves and turn to fighting the enemies?" He said just now that if these people are not practicing Islam, they cannot fight the disbelievers. So we said to him: "You have known it, so adhere to it." And now we say: They know Islam but do not practice it. Can these people stand against the enemies of these people, or must they be practitioners of Islam, not just content with knowing it? If he says—as is hoped—that they must also be practitioners of Islam; then at that time we say to him and to those like him who are deluded by empty claims: "Rise up and fight the disbelievers and leave the differences." We say to him as the Lord of the Worlds said:
And say, "Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so, will] His Messenger and the believers وَقُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ
[At-Tawbah 9:105]
"Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed" ... Yes? And the believers?
And say, "Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so, will] His Messenger and the believers وَقُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ
[At-Tawbah 9:105]
""Then you will be returned""
to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do." إِلَى عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
[At-Tawbah 9:94]
.
And action, as we detailed just now, should be based on knowledge. So how do you act, poor man, if you find two opinions from scholars among those many opinions that you turned a blind eye to and ordered them to respond to this individual's command that they agree?! If you are told—for example—on one of the edges of the creed related to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), if you are told: "Where is Allah?" You will hear two contradictory and divergent answers, which confirms what I pointed out just now regarding the disagreement. Some of them, who are the people of the Sunnah, say what the early Imams said, as did the Companions of the Messenger (peace be upon him) ... and the authentic Sunnah. They will answer this question, "Where is Allah?" by saying: "Allah is in the sky," as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said in the Qur'an:
(16) Do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway? (17) Or do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning.
[Al-Mulk 67:16-17]
. You will find another opinion that says: "Allah is everywhere, Allah exists in all existence." And here are places ... and dirty sewers and huts and the like; these are among the places. So they have brought their true object of worship into these places, some of which they do not enter at all, and some of which they enter reluctantly. Is it permissible to ... the Lord of the Worlds?! What is your position, O enthusiastic young man who calls people to ignore this existing difference among them? With which group are you, whether you are with these or with those? Can you combine the two opposites in your mind and say: The one who says that Allah is in the sky, as the maidservant said in answer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he asked her ... in the sky; he is right, and those who say that Allah is everywhere, and among those places are filths as we mentioned?
If you say that both are correct, you contradict the clear text of the Qur'an ... His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He):
And what can be beyond truth except error?
[Yunus 10:32]
. If the saying of the first group, "Allah is in the sky," is true—and it is so—because the saying of the Lord of the Worlds, as you heard ... then that opposing saying is false by the text of the Qur'an. And if you say the opposite; that is, the saying of the second group is the correct one, it necessitates that the saying of the first group is false. So how do you combine, by your text, two divergent and contradictory sayings? And then you want all these scholars, and you are certainly not one of them; because the one who says this has not known Islam, has not read this verse, and if he read it, he did not understand it:
And what can be beyond truth except error?
[Yunus 10:32]
. And there is His saying (peace be upon him):
When a judge gives a decision having tried his best to decide correctly and is right, he will have a double reward; and when he gives a decision having tried his best to decide correctly and is wrong, he will have a single reward.
Mishkat al-Masabih 3732
. So if there are two divergent opinions in the matter, there is no doubt that one is correct and the other is wrong ... How do these enthusiastic young Muslims live? Why? For something in the name of Islam, but if you ask him ... in some of the supplications for opening the prayer at night:
Guide me with Thy permission in the divergent views (which the people) hold about Truth, for it is Thou Who guidest whom Thou wilt to the Straight Path.
Sahih Muslim 770
.
